Position: Student Executive Director, Center for Community Outreach

Position Overview

This position coordinates and oversees the general operations of the Center for Community Outreach (CCO) to develop positive relationships and effective programming with community partners and the KU community. The Executive Director is tasked with communicating with KU administration, Lawrence community leaders, KU students, and members of various groups, organizations, and committees. The Executive Director also oversees the CCO staff and serves as Chair of the CCO Advisory Board.

Additional responsibilities include advising seven CCO programs, sitting on various boards and committees, assisting in planning large CCO events, and increasing the KU volunteer base through marketing and promotional strategies. The Executive Director must work closely with the Managing Director to ensure that internal programs, development, and publicity match community needs while fulfilling the organization’s mission. Hiring, weekly hour maximum, and hourly rate of pay are contingent on KU Student Senate funding.

Responsibilities

75% - Peer Advising and Program Management

  • Collaborate with Managing Director over the summer to plan Super Service Saturday.
  • Organize the selection of the CCO Directors and Program Coordinators in collaboration with the Managing Director.
  • Organize and lead weekly meetings with the Executive Staff to discuss current and upcoming events, CORE meetings, and current programmatic functioning.
  • Peer advise seven CCO programs and Creative and Communications Directors. Programs will be divided up between the Executive and Managing Directors with insight from outgoing directors and CCO advisors.
  • In Peer Advising meetings, manage event planning/ongoing need progress, ensure program turnover updates are completed in a timely fashion, and assign office hour tasks.
  • Encourage and facilitate collaborative events and programs between and within CCO programs.
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Center for Service Learning to discuss internal management and CCO programming.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director to ensure overall program health; meeting once a week to discuss current CCO needs.
  • Chair the CCO Advisory Board. This responsibility includes scheduling, planning, and leading Advisory Board meetings. These meetings take place once a semester.

20% - Community and Campus Outreach

  • Act as a liaison between the CCO, the University of Kansas, and the greater Lawrence community through consistent and reliable email communication.
  • Present and conduct outreach to student groups, organizations, and classes to increase CCO’s visibility.
  • Maintain contact with Alternative Breaks, Student United Way, the Center for Service Learning, and others to understand current service needs in Lawrence and on campus. In addition, work collaboratively with United Way to ensure that our volunteer platform, volunteer.ku.edu, is reflective of the current community needs.
  • Maintain the CCO’s page on KU Engage by annually updating the constitution and bylaws, managing program coordinators’ member status, referring students external to the CCO who present an interest in the CCO to volunteer.ku.edu, and posting current CCO events.

5% - Additional tasks and projects as determined throughout the term

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working with the Center for Community Outreach.
  • Ability to demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Position Requirements

    During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
