Job Summary

The Designated RN Charge nurse is a role model and a resource for the department. The Charge is responsible for assessing the units' need to provide adequate resources for current and upcoming shifts by collaborating with the director, nursing supervisor and other departments.

Job Responsibilities
  • Front‑line leadership for the department.
  • Coordinates with medical staff and provides leadership and guidance to the nursing team to ensure high quality and safe patient care is delivered.
  • Monitoring/management of patient flow within the department.
  • Delegates patient assignments based on acuity, delegates tasks appropriately and adjusts staffing needs as required.
  • Provides clinical guidance to staff nurses, addressing complex patient situations and making informed decisions regarding patient care.
  • Ensures a smooth handover between shifts by providing comprehensive reports on patient status and updates to the incoming charge nurse.
  • Monitors adherence to policies and procedures, identifying areas for improvement and implementing quality initiatives within the unit.
  • Assists with department education needs for existing and new staff.
  • Fosters a team approach by addressing staff concerns/conflict resolution in real time.
  • Develops therapeutic relationships with patients and families; promotes decision making based on the assessment of patient medical histories, symptoms, examinations, diagnosis, conditions and treatments.
  • Complies with laws and regulations in maintaining patient information.
  • Provides effective patient/family education focusing on improving their understanding of their condition and treatment plan to optimize their health outcomes.
  • Performs nursing care according to the population served on the unit as referenced in the Administrative, Scope of Services Policy.
  • Attends leadership development courses quarterly.
  • Actively participates in staff 90‑day and annual evaluations as assigned/directed by the Department Director.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in line with current basic nursing scope.
Job Qualifications
  • Required: Associates in Nursing or diploma.
  • Required: Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
  • Required: Current Registered Nurse license to practice in Kansas.
  • Required: If holding this position in the BHP Treatment & Recovery department, must have two years of psychiatric nursing experience.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s in Nursing.
