Research Assistant/Associate
The Kansas Geological Survey is currently hiring a Library Assistant. The Library Assistant will sort through the collections, inventory, enter data, scan records, as well as recycle and integrate into permanent collections as needed. This position is based in a public library setting and supports the preservation and accessibility of state geological records. Responsibilities include archival processing, data entry, scanning documents and providing assistance to Public or internal staff.
Work hours must be completed on-site between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Flexible scheduling within these hours is available, and the start date may be adjusted to accommodate the selected candidate's availability.
Job Description
60%:
Enter data and scan records, proof data and scans.
20%:
Inventory, manually move, sort, and organize current collections including, but limited to wireline logs, scout cards, completion reports, geologist reports, and DTS.
10%:
Recycle or integrate donations into permanent collection at supervisor’s discretion.
5%:
Provide assistance to the public and internal staff.
5%:
Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to push rolling bookcases in confined area, climb step ladders, and lift 15-20 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work in storage areas, capable of working with old documents which may be dusty, musty, or moldy, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- High school diploma or GED and minimum of one year library or related experience.
- Experience with organizing, categorizing, and shelving records as evidenced by application material.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook, and Teams as evidenced by application material.
- Coursework, experience, or demonstrated interest in geology, geography, or related earth science disciplines as evidenced by application material.
- Proficient in research skills, including database searching and web-based research as required by previous coursework or work history.
- Demonstrated knowledge of or previous work experience with records filed by legal land description (section, township, range) as evidenced by application material.
- Experience scanning documents, books, or other records as evidenced by application material.
- Experience with data entry as evidenced by application material.
$37,440 - $45,760, depending on qualifications and experience
