Overview
The Boiler Operator position is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of low or high-pressure steam boilers and related mechanical equipment and systems in an institutional Power Plant. Work involves operating and maintaining boilers, water softeners, chillers, compressors, generators and other equipment in a central heating and power plant. Tasks include monitoring equipment operation by reading gauges, meters and charts, testing water and recording information to ensure efficiency and safety, and assisting in minor maintenance and repair work.
Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and is subject to inspection by the shift supervisor. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles.
- Operate boilers, pumps, air compressors, de-aerators, water softeners, valves, regulators and pneumatic controls to maintain proper steam pressure, temperature and water level.
- Check proper operation of safety alarms, pumps, valves and piping systems; read gauges, thermometers and charts and record information.
- Inspect boilers, pumps, valves, piping systems and auxiliary equipment to determine repair or preventive maintenance scheduling and perform water testing.
- Maintain daily operational records of boilers, pumps, deaerators and air compressors.
- Prepare for inspections and assist in overhauls or repairs as needed; ascend/descend multi-level stairs and ladders and work from inside boiler openings.
- Assist in piping systems fabrication, installation and maintenance for boilers, pumps, steam, condensate, feed-water, cooling water, pneumatics and lubricating systems in accordance with applicable codes; select materials from blueprints and manuals and plan installation or repair sequences.
- Assist in or perform cleaning, replacement, installation, lubrication and repacking of filters, pipes, pumps, valves, heat exchangers and auxiliary equipment.
- Assist senior personnel in maintaining equipment and preparing boilers for inspection; perform routine cleanliness to comply with safety codes.
- Assist in correcting problems in water distribution, steam distribution, or electrical feeders and support snow removal and surface treatment as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Four days on shift, with three days off. Overtime and after-hours call back as needed.
