Position Overview
The Boiler Operator position will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of low or high‑pressure steam boilers and related mechanical equipment and systems in an institutional Power Plant. Work involves operating and maintaining low or stationary high‑pressure boilers, water softeners, chillers, compressors, generators and other equipment in a central heating and power plant. The role includes maintaining constant surveillance of equipment operation, reading gauges, meters and charts, testing water, recording information to ensure efficiency and safety, and assisting in minor maintenance and repair work.
Tasks are performed in accordance with established procedures and are subject to inspection by the shift supervisor. This position requires the operation of work‑issued vehicles.
- Four days on shift, with three days off. Overtime and after‑hours call back as needed.
- Saturday 8 pm – Sunday 8 am
- Sunday 8 pm – Monday 8 am
- Monday 8 pm – Tuesday 4 am
- Tuesday 8 pm – Wednesday 4 am
Operate boilers, pumps, air compressors, deaerators, water softeners, valves, regulators and pneumatic controls to maintain proper steam pressure, temperature, and water level. Check safety alarms, pumps, valves, and piping systems; read gauges, thermometers, and charts and record information. Assist with or perform inspections of boilers, pumps, valves, piping systems, and auxiliary equipment to determine preventive maintenance or repair needs, including water testing.
Work involves ascending/descending multi‑level stairs, using vertical ladders, and working from inside boilers accessible through approximately 12″ by 16″ openings. Notify appropriate personnel of malfunctions and maintain daily operational records. Basic mathematical calculations and comprehension of controlling instruments required.
Assist in or personally perform fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance of piping systems, valves, and equipment for boilers, pumps, steam, condensate, feed‑water, cooling water, pneumatics, and lubricating systems following National Plumbing, ASTM, and ASTM codes. Select materials from blueprints, manuals, schematics, and drawings; plan installation or repair sequences; use appropriate pipe cutters, threaders, and fittings; join piping by flanging, threading, soldering, or fusing.
25%– Equipment Maintenance
Assist in or personally perform cleaning, replacement, installation, lubrication, and repacking of filters, pipes, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and auxiliary equipment to maintain plant operation and perform emergency repairs. Assist Senior Boiler Operators in overhauling pumps, replacing bearings, seals, packing, shafts, and other parts. Perform routine cleanliness tasks to keep the plant and equipment in compliance with national fire and safety codes.
10%– Related Duties
Assist Senior Boiler Operators in correcting problems such as water breaks, steam distribution irregularities, or electrical feeder issues until systems are stable. Assist with snow removal and surface treatment.
5% – Other DutiesPerform other duties as assigned.
Position RequirementsStarting at $50,000.
