Position Summary:
Leahy Middle School is seeking a committed and collaborative Special Education Teacher to provide high-quality instruction and services to students with moderate disabilities in grades 5-8. This educator will work with students in inclusion, pull-out, and/or substantially separate settings to support access to grade-level content and to close learning gaps. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a belief in every student's ability to succeed, and bring experience in supporting students with diverse learning needs in an urban setting.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Provide specially designed instruction aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with Massachusetts regulations.
* Deliver instruction in inclusive, pull-out, and/or small group settings, collaborating with general education teachers and support staff.
* Modify curriculum from high-quality instructional programs (e.g., Fish Tank ELA, Investigating History, Illustrative Math, Know Atom) to meet diverse learner needs.
* Develop and implement positive behavior supports and classroom management strategies to promote student success.
* Collect and analyze academic and behavioral data to inform instruction and develop data-driven IEP goals.
* Ensure IEP compliance including timely completion of progress reports, quarterly benchmarks, and participation in annual IEP meetings.
* Collaborate with team members, service providers, and families to provide coordinated support and ensure a team-based approach to student success.
* Maintain documentation of services, accommodations, and progress in accordance with district protocols.
* Participate in professional development, PLCs, and coaching opportunities to grow in instructional and behavioral strategies.
* Utilize assistive technology, AAC, or other supports as appropriate to promote access and independence
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* Deep knowledge of special education laws and regulations (IDEA, Section 504, Massachusetts Special Education Law).
* Familiarity with co-teaching models, differentiated instruction, and UDL principles.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills with colleagues, students, and families.
* Experience implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and functional behavioral assessments (FBAs).
* Comfort using progress monitoring tools, online IEP platforms, and data systems.
* Commitment to inclusive practices, cultural responsiveness, and equity in education.
Qualifications & Requirements:
* Valid Massachusetts license in Moderate Disabilities (5-12)
* SEI Endorsement or ESL dual licensure preferre
* Bachelor's degree required;
Master's in Special Education or related field strongly preferred
* Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in an urban middle school or similar setting
* Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with trauma or high needs preferred

Pay Range
* $61,788 - $94,614
