Summary
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Visual Arts Teacher to inspire creativity and foster artistic development among students of differing age groups. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in art education, fine arts and classroom management. The Visual Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging visual arts instruction to students in grades 9-12. This role emphasizes the development of technical and artistic skills while fostering creativity, problem-solving, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. The teacher creates a supportive studio environment where students are encouraged to explore a variety of media, techniques, and artistic perspectives.
Reports to the Fine & Performing Arts Department Chair.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Plan and deliver a comprehensive art curriculum for multiple grade levels, adapting instruction to meet diverse student needs and skill levels.
- Teach and demonstrate foundational and advanced techniques across various media (drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography, and/or digital art).
- Foster students’ creativity while building strong technical proficiency.
- Encourage critical analysis and discussion of artwork, including historical and contemporary works.
- Assess student progress through projects and critiques, providing constructive and timely feedback.
- Maintain an organized, safe, and inspiring classroom/studio environment.
- Manage art supplies, equipment, and inventory within budget guidelines.
- Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and school initiatives
- Develop and implement comprehensive art curricula aligned with educational standards and tailored to diverse student needs.
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons that incorporate various art techniques, mediums, and cultural perspectives.
- Manage classroom behavior effectively to create a positive learning environment conducive to artistic exploration that encourages creativity and respect among students.
- Maintain a safe, organized classroom environment Collaborate with colleagues to integrate art into interdisciplinary projects and school-wide activities.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with teaching strategies, curriculum innovations, and child development research.
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field; advanced certifications preferred.
- Proven experience teaching art in a high school or similar settings
- Knowledge of curriculum development and lesson planning.
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods for students with special needs or behavioral challenges.
- Experience with Sketch Up and 3D modeling software.
- A background in photography and film development.
- A willingness to contribute to the broader school community through clubs, exhibitions, or extracurricular activities.
Mobility & Movement
- Standing and Walking:
Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods (up to 6-8 hours per day) to instruct students, circulate the classroom, monitor hallways, and supervise recess/lunch. - Reaching and Lifting:
Ability to reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally to access and arrange teaching materials, whiteboards, or bulletin boards. - Lifting and Carrying:
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (e.g., boxes of books, educational supplies, or technology equipment) on an occasional basis. - Bending and Kneeling:
