Abbott Lawrence Academy (ALA) offers students a unique honors education in the tradition of the most prestigious independent schools, free of charge. Our students undergo a comprehensive admissions process and experience a personalized, accelerated academic program combined with enrichment opportunities available on the Lawrence High School campus. ALA challenges its students daily and prepares them for admission to the nation’s most competitive colleges and universities.

Students also participate in a club or sport each year and complete at least 100 hours of community service. Our goal is to develop well‑rounded students equipped with the skills for successful post‑secondary careers.

Position Summary

The AP English Literature and Composition Teacher will maintain a safe, inclusive classroom aligned with College Board outcomes. The role involves designing developmentally appropriate challenges, providing rigorous instruction, and fostering habits of mind. The teacher supports diverse learning styles and creates opportunities for independent and collaborative work in grades 9‑12. The ideal candidate builds lasting relationships with students and families, embodies ALA’s mission, and promotes hard work, determination, and citizenship.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teach, reinforce, remediate, and ensure mastery of academic content with individual students, small groups, and whole classes (AP English Literature and Composition, Senior English, and Grade 10 Speech and Composition).
  • Design and implement curricula and activities to meet Common Core standards at honors, pre‑AP, and AP levels.
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress toward academic standards.
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum and modify instructional practices.
  • Maintain professional, consistent communication with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Enlist families and community organizations as partners in the school’s mission.
  • Provide support, accommodations, and attention to all students.
  • Participate in school‑wide planning, curriculum and professional development, collaborative team meetings, grade‑level activities, and school‑wide functions.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, respectful learning environment where students are engaged and motivated, reinforcing expectations for behavior and teamwork.
  • Model and promote high expectations for student behavior and academic achievement.
  • Comply with school, district, and statewide policies and regulations.
  • Be accountable for students’ mastery of academic standards.
  • Regularly assess and document student learning and progress.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
