PositionSummary
The Middle School ELA Coach will provide personalized coaching, professional development, and resources to support ELA and Humanities teachers at Leonard Middle School. The coach will work to strengthen instructional practices, classroom culture, and content knowledge within the ELA Humanities departments, with a focus on Fish Tank, Investigating History, and the Democratic Knowledge Project (experience with these curricula preferred but not required).
The coach will also assist the Principal in developing and implementing systems of tiered support to ensure academic proficiency for all students and close achievement gaps, particularly for multilingual learners.
- Provide individualized coaching to ELA teachers, including 1:1 support for lesson planning and instructional delivery aligned to high‑quality curriculum materials such as Fish Tank, Investigating History, and the Democratic Knowledge Project.
- Assist teachers with classroom management strategies and establishing positive, engaging learning environments.
- Model effective ELA Humanities teaching strategies and co‑teach when appropriate.
- Observe ELA Humanities instruction and provide specific, actionable feedback to improve teaching practices.
- Design and deliver targeted professional development workshops in collaboration with school staff.
- Support teachers in implementing district and curriculum‑based assessments and analyzing data to inform instruction.
- Collaborate with school leadership and teacher teams to identify areas of need for teacher support and professional learning.
- Assist in the development and implementation of tiered interventions (Tier 2 and
3) for students struggling in ELA Humanities. - Create and maintain a resource library of instructional materials and research‑based strategies for ELA Humanities.
- Document coaching interactions and teacher progress to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Participate in district‑wide coaches' meetings and professional learning opportunities to strengthen coaching skills and content expertise.
- Perform other responsibilities as requested by the Principal.
- Demonstrated expertise in effective instructional practices, curriculum implementation, and content knowledge in Middle School ELA and Humanities.
- Familiarity or experience with Fish Tank, Investigating History, and/or the Democratic Knowledge Project curricula preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and educator evaluation system.
- Experience in adult learning, coaching, or leading professional development.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to build trusting relationships with colleagues and foster a collaborative culture.
- Data‑driven mindset to guide instruction and measure student progress.
- Commitment to culturally responsive teaching practices and supporting diverse learners.
- Valid Massachusetts teaching license
- SEI Endorsement or dual certification in ESL Education
- Master's degree in Education or related field
- Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience in K‑12 settings
- Prior experience as an instructional coach, mentor teacher, or department lead.
- Experience with Fish Tank, Investigating History, and/or the Democratic Knowledge Project (preferred, not required).
