Job Description
OverviewPosition Summary
Incumbents of positions in this series prepare or review plans, designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects; prepare and/or review reports, studies and analytical data; perform calculations relating to engineering problems; perform engineering surveys; inspect construction and/or maintenance work; and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to perform professional engineering duties in such areas as highways, bridges, buildings and facilities all in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulations and standards.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates for routine maintenance projects and in-house design projects, in accordance with MassDOT standards, guidelines, and SOPs.
- Coordinate with Resident Engineers, Section Managers, and other District 6 staff to identify project needs and incorporate constructability feedback and lessons learned during the development of in-house projects.
- Assist senior engineers in resolving project development issues by performing field inspections, coordinating with District 6 staff and HQ to ensure PS&E, Advertisement, and bid opening date proceed in a timely manner.
- Maintain project files and records, prepare reports and correspondence, and assist with updating the Project Development Routine Maintenance List and in-house design schedules.
- Provide engineering support for in-house designs, including drafting plans, preparing engineering estimates and specifications conforming to MassDOT design standards.
- Coordinate with internal reviewers to address comments through all stages of project development.
- Mentor junior staff by sharing expertise in maintenance contract preparation and in-house design processes while developing their engineering and CAD skills.
- Attend trainings as required to enhance technical skills, software proficiency, and knowledge of applicable state & federal design standards.
- Assist with the reviews of shop drawings and/or submittals made by contractors for maintenance contracts and/or in-house design projects.
- This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus for newly hired MassDOT employees, distributed in two parts: $3,000 in the first paycheck and $2,000 after successful probationary completion.

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions
- I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
- II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.
- III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering may be substituted for the required experience.
