Position

Summary

The Building Custodian plays a critical role in providing students, staff, and the community with a safe, clean, comfortable, and efficient environment in which to learn, work, and gather. The custodian ensures that school facilities and grounds are maintained to high standards, performing routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and operational duties.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide preventive maintenance on a regular schedule for motors, mechanical equipment, and heating systems.
  • Maintain all firefighting equipment in excellent condition and know how to use it in emergencies.
  • Operate and maintain power scrubbing and polishing machines, vacuums, snow blowers, and similar equipment.
  • Respond to custodial or maintenance requests from the principal or staff.
  • Clean and properly store custodial equipment and tools after each use.
  • Inform head custodian or principal of damaged or lost tools to ensure availability for operations.
  • Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean.
  • Shovel, plow, and sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as needed.
  • Check daily to ensure all exit doors are operational and panic bolts are functioning.
  • Raise and lower the U.S. flag daily according to schedule.
  • Sweep classrooms daily, dust furniture, and clean corridors after school or as needed.
  • Scrub, disinfect, and maintain toilet floors and sanitary fixtures daily.
  • Wash windows inside and outside at least twice a year or as needed.
  • Keep grounds free of rubbish and perform yard care tasks like mowing and trimming.
  • Maintain all floors in clean, attractive condition and preserve their quality.
  • Clean chalkboards at least once a week.
  • Make minor building repairs and report major repairs promptly.
  • Maintain and service motors and mechanical equipment on a regular schedule.
  • Report immediately any damage to school property.
  • Remain on premises during required hours, including during authorized building use.
  • Open and close the building daily, ensuring security of doors, windows, and lights.
  • Conduct ongoing maintenance and general upkeep of the facility.
  • Move furniture or equipment as needed for school activities.
  • Follow local regulations for storage and disposal of trash and waste.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and conduct general maintenance.
  • Familiarity with safe practices in handling cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds-keeping machinery.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail to maintain cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Ability to respond promptly to emergencies and building needs.
  • Good communication skills to work effectively with school staff and administration.
