The Town of Edgartown is seeking a Beach Director to provide maintenance and on-site supervision of the Town’s public beaches. Under the direction of the Parks Commission, this position is responsible for the safe, clean, and efficient operation of Edgartown beaches, including outdoor maintenance of beach resources, patrol and enforcement of applicable bylaws and regulations, and overall responsibility for beach safety.
The Beach Director coordinates and supervises the lifeguard and beach ranger programs, ensures staff readiness and professionalism, responds to public inquiries and concerns, and works closely with other Town departments and agencies to maintain use of beach facilities. The role requires strong supervisory skills, sound judgment, effective communication, and the ability to work independently in both office and outdoor environments.
A high school diploma, at least two years of supervisory experience, and a valid U.S. driver’s license are required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. - Responsible for duties requiring thorough knowledge of town by-laws, all applicable state & federal laws and department rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to Beach Director duties and functions;
- Works independently and in combination with other department employees or agencies;
- Possess the ability to explain applicable statutes and by-laws which regulate the control of parking and beach access, use of Town of Edgartown regulated beach recreational areas; advises individuals on specific state laws, town by-laws, codes and rules or regulations regarding such use or access; issues verbal warnings to violators;
- Prepares and submits written reports, records or other documents as required;
- Communicates orally and in writing effectively to co-workers, superiors, the general public, other town departments, other governmental agencies and others;
- Attends meetings of designated town officials and participates in discussion on matters affecting Park Department program;
- Maintains activity and/or vehicle logs as required;
- Maintains all department vehicles and equipment assigned to him/her in efficient order and treats such vehicles and equipment with proper care. Reports any damage or inadequacies as required. Make certain that all portable bath units are clean and properly maintained by subcontracted company;
- Wears town issued uniform while on duty and properly uses equipment assigned to him/her and in a manner prescribed by the Recreation Director and/or Recreation Program Supervisor. Responsible for making sure staff are presentable and in uniform before shift begins;
- Assists in the operation of the town beaches and other properties under the care and control of the Edgartown Park Department for recreational use; patrols Town of Edgartown staffed beaches daily to ensure compliance with safety, town by-laws and other regulations. Makes written reports, maintains a daily log and reports any unusual circumstances to the Department Head. Contacts other agencies for immediate response if dictated by the circumstances;
