Purpose of Position

To perform the duties and responsibilities of a Cytotechnologist including specific administrative functions as defined.

Description
  • Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external, and seeks to continually improve customer service and satisfaction.
  • Screens an average minimum of 60 slides per day prepared from both gynecological and non‑gynecological sources and signs out results of the highest possible quality.
  • Responsible for documenting:
    • The slide interpretation results of each case examined or reviewed.
    • For each 24‑hour period, the total number of slides examined or reviewed in all laboratories.
    • The number of hours spent examining slides in each 24‑hour period.
  • Prepares monthly work statistics.
  • Serves as technical reference for physicians and other health‑care professionals.
  • Performs all facets of cyto‑preparation and post‑cyto preparation.
  • Assists in preparation of material obtained from fine‑needle aspirations.
  • Performs and documents troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Reviews and revises section manuals as assigned to remain in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards, at least annually.
  • Assists the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and pathologists in maintaining the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Program: designs and implements Quality Assurance projects, collects data, summarizes results, and makes recommendations.
  • Assists in retrospective quality assurance reviews.
  • Participates in the preparation of cytology‑histology problem case sets.
  • Practices efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies; checks inventory, orders supplies, and restocks upon arrival.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
  • Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients, and guests, effectively serving as part of the Laboratory team in providing professional service to patients.
  • Maintains work benches, testing areas, and other work areas in a clean, sanitary, and clutter‑free condition for the safety of patients, guests, and staff.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to stay abreast of latest trends in the field; documents completion of at least 6.0 CEUS as approved by the ASCP and/or ASCT.
  • Teaches practical and theoretical principles of test procedures, presents in‑services, and assists in the preparation of in‑service and continuing education programs.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including fire and disaster plans.
  • Performs other work‑related duties and activities as assigned or requested.

Qualifications
  • Read, write, and communicate in English.
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree (copy of degree or transcript required) plus or including one full year in an accredited School of Cytotechnology.
  • CT (ASCP) registered.
  • Employees with five years of experience will be expected to perform QA/QC when asked.

Schedule Details: 24/32 FLEX hours per week. Hours will be 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; 8:0 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8‑hour shifts; occasional weekends and occasional holidays.
