Job Description
The Traffic Engineer will report to the Plan Review Manager in the Infrastructure Development Division. The primary responsibilities of this role are reviewing development plans and traffic impact analyses submitted at both rezoning and development permit review stages to ensure the design is consistent with the County’s Unified Development Ordinance and adopted standards, assessing potential traffic impacts and coordinating with planners within the Zoning and Land Development Division and Gwinnett County Department of Transportation (GCDOT) on proposed improvements and mitigation measures, and reviewing and coordinating mobility components such as multi‑modal requirements based on the County’s small area plans, countywide trail vision plan, and infrastructure plans to facilitate implementation.
EssentialDuties
- Review development plans for street modifications, new streets, intersections, and traffic control systems, ensuring compliance with codes and design standards.
- Use GIS and traffic simulation tools to model traffic patterns and assess project impacts.
- Coordinate with GCDOT and other local, state, and federal agencies as needed. Engage community stakeholders to address traffic issues associated with proposed developments.
- Develop updates of Unified Development Ordinance and engineering standards.
- Mentor and support team projects in traffic engineering and planning evaluation and development review.
- Continually strive to promote and maintain the Gwinnett Standard of excellence.
- Work to build a positive and inclusive culture.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement.
- Develop work plans and operational improvement initiatives.
- Actively collaborate with other departments and divisions within the department to maintain effective working relationships and enhance service delivery.
- Maintain a solution‑oriented culture that emphasizes communication and collaboration.
- Stay current of regional and national best practices and relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and standards to ensure they are met.
- Serve as a team lead, prepare training materials, and provide regular training to other team members.
- May provide managerial and supervisory support and staff evaluation to assigned staff.
- Manage special projects and complete other tasks as assigned.
The grade for this position is C45(1).
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in engineering and two years of progressively responsible engineering experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above will also be considered.
- Valid driver's license from the state of residency.
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or transportation engineering.
- Three years of traffic engineering or development review experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Certifications:
ITE Traffic Engineering Certification, MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, and other relevant standards.
