This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Movable Bridge Mechanical Engineer to join our nationally recognized Transportation & Infrastructure practice in Lawrenceville, NJ
. This opportunity is ideal for an engineer who is interested in the design, inspection, evaluation, rehabilitation, and construction support of bridge mechanical systems and transportation infrastructure.

The selected candidate will support projects involving movable bridges, bridge machinery systems, hydraulic and mechanical equipment, structural machinery rehabilitation, transportation facilities, and other public infrastructure assets. Working alongside experienced bridge engineers and technical specialists, you will contribute to projects that improve mobility, reliability, and safety for communities across North America.

Your Impact
  • Assist with the planning, analysis, inspection, design, and rehabilitation of mechanical systems associated with movable bridges and transportation infrastructure.
  • Support engineering evaluations of bridge operating machinery, drive systems, hydraulic equipment, bearings, motors, gearboxes, machinery supports, and related mechanical components.
  • Perform engineering calculations, equipment sizing, load analyses, and design studies under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participate in bridge inspections, field assessments, condition evaluations, and constructability reviews.
  • Collect and analyze field data, technical drawings, specifications, maintenance records, and inspection reports.
  • Assist with the preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates, engineering reports, and construction documents.
  • Coordinate with structural, electrical, civil, and transportation engineering disciplines on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Support construction administration activities, including shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, equipment testing, commissioning, and field observations.
  • Utilize engineering software, CAD platforms, and industry-standard tools to develop engineering deliverables.
  • Assist with evaluating existing bridge systems and recommending repair, replacement, or modernization solutions.
  • Support asset management and life-cycle evaluation efforts for transportation agencies and public-sector clients.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct while adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 1-3 years of relevant engineering experience in transportation, infrastructure, bridges, mechanical systems, construction, manufacturing, or related industries.
  • Fundamental understanding of mechanics, machine design, hydraulics, power transmission systems, and engineering principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD or Micro Station.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to travel periodically for field inspections, client meetings, and project site visits.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer-in-Training (
    EIT
    ) certification or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Previous internship or co-op experience involving bridges, transportation infrastructure, heavy mechanical equipment, construction, manufacturing, or engineering consulting.
  • Familiarity with movable bridges, hydraulic systems, gear drives, machinery design, or transportation facilities.
  • Experience with inspection reports, technical calculations, engineering drawings, or construction documentation.
  • Working knowledge of AASHTO, AREMA, ASME, or related industry standards.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Micro Station, MathCAD, or similar engineering software.
  • Participation in ASME, NSPE, ASCE, HMS, or other professional organizations.
  • Availability to travel for work occasionally for projects as required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
