Position Statement:

Founded in 2005, Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) is the 31st member of the University System of Georgia. GGC is a premier 21st century liberal arts institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools. With a current enrollment of almost 13,000 students, including both residential and commuter students. Located in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, GGC provides a student centered, technology-enriched learning environment.

Gwinnett County (pop. 850,000+) is home to a variety of businesses, including organizations involved in health care, education and information technology.

Description:

Reporting to the Director of Application Development, the Technical Trainer/Writer has a two-fold responsibility:

(1) writing and editing technical and instructional documentation supporting software and other functions at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC).

(2) develop and deliver training on software deployed by the Office of Educational Technology (OET) that affects all faculty, staff, and students, at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC).

This person must have excellent research, organizational, and communication skills, and the ability to translate technical terms into text that any reader can understand and be competent in holding training classes or individual training sessions on software supported by OET.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, and interactive how-to documentation, training / instructional materials.
  • Establish standards regarding process, order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology for technical documentation and communications.
  • Develop a calendar of training opportunities and facilitate regular small group training classes and/or individual sessions (available to technical and non-technical staff and faculty) on system-wide software and hardware provided by OET. This software includes but is not limited to applications such as Microsoft Office suite, various email platforms (i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Office 365), GGC's help desk ticketing system, web applications created for internal departments, new hire / policy orientation (coordination with The Office of Human Resources), mandatory accessibility training, etc.
  • Interface with Educational Technology Directors and Project Coordinators regarding training on system(s) and documentation as project deliverables.
  • Work with external customer representative(s) to identify requirements for training and documentation needs.
  • Collaborate with other constituents of the College regarding New Faculty Orientation (NFO) with supporting documentation/links on the use of classroom technology.
  • Maintain various social media outlets to promote OET involvement in campus related events, etc.
  • Review help desk tickets to determine training and documentation needs across the campus.
  • Assist Classroom Technology experts in training and provide documentation regarding technology in classrooms, and meeting spaces.
  • Review published materials on MyGGC technology page with recommended revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of delivery.
  • Quickly learn new programs and adapt to changes in existing programs and/or online applications.
  • Design and produce new interactive training materials by translating educational, functional, and technical requirements into a comprehensive training program for end users and facilitators.
  • Seek continuous process and relationship improvements between technical writing and documentation, training, and materials.
  • Assist members of OET with building documentation on existing processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate with other training units on campus.
Minimum Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a business or technical-related field such as Instructional Technology/Design and Information Technology or Technical Writing, or a related field such as Education, Management, Human Resources, or Information Systems;
    Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of technical training / writing / experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Self-starter who takes initiatives with implementing new policies and projects.
  • The ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience working on in a fast-paced environment and ability to work on complex projects.
Physical Requirements

Position requires local travel. Ability to lift and carry files and materials. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone and in writing. Job takes place in normal environmental conditions.
