Engineering Laboratory Technician - EMC

Performs laboratory testing of electrical and electronic products in accordance with approved test procedures, laboratory work instructions, applicable standards and regulations, and quality-system requirements. The position initially works under general supervision and progresses toward independently conducting assigned testing after completing the required training and competency approvals. The technician prepares test configurations, operates laboratory instrumentation and software, records results, identifies abnormal conditions, performs basic troubleshooting, and communicates test status and technical observations to laboratory personnel and, occasionally, customers.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated, interested in learning, attentive to detail, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Prior electromagnetic compatibility testing experience is not required. Position-specific training will be provided.

Job functions include:

  • Perform laboratory testing – 35%
    • Perform assigned testing of electrical and electronic products in accordance with approved procedures, laboratory work instructions, applicable standards and regulations, and the laboratory's accredited scope.
    • Operate laboratory instrumentation, automated test systems, test-control software, and support equipment after completing the required training and competency approvals.
    • Monitor products during testing and identify unexpected operation, equipment faults, test-system problems, or potentially unsafe conditions.
    • Work independently on assigned testing after demonstrating the required competency.
  • Prepare test configurations – 20%
    • Prepare products, cables, support equipment, operating accessories, monitoring equipment, and laboratory test configurations.
    • Assemble and verify test setups using cables, connectors, adapters, probes, antennas, fixtures, power sources, and support equipment.
    • Confirm that the product is configured and operating in the required mode before and during testing.
    • Assist customers and project personnel with identifying appropriate product operating modes and support equipment.
  • Document testing activities – 15%
    • Accurately document test configurations, equipment used, product operating modes, observations, deviations, measurement results, photographs, and other required technical information.
    • Enter test data into spreadsheets, test software, laboratory systems, and report templates.
    • Maintain complete, accurate, traceable, and legible laboratory records.
    • Protect customer information and test data in accordance with confidentiality and data-integrity requirements.
  • Equipment verification and troubleshooting – 10%
    • Verify that laboratory equipment is within calibration and approved for use.
    • Complete required pre-test equipment checks, system verifications, and equipment-status reviews.
    • Perform basic troubleshooting of test setups, instrumentation, cables, connectors, fixtures, support equipment, and products under evaluation.
    • Promptly report equipment failures, damaged accessories, unexpected results, or conditions that may affect test validity.
  • Communication and project coordination – 10%
    • Communicate testing status, scheduling concerns, technical observations, equipment issues, and potential delays to engineers, reviewers, project coordinators, and supervisors.
    • Communicate professionally with customers when clarification of product setup, operating modes, support equipment, or observed behavior is required.
    • Manage multiple assigned projects and notify the appropriate personnel when priorities, resources, or schedules conflict.
    • Participate in project handoffs, laboratory meetings, technical discussions, and training activities.
  • Laboratory maintenance, quality, and safety – 10%
    • Maintain laboratory organization, equipment, cables, accessories, tools, fixtures, and test areas.
    • Return equipment and accessories to their designated locations after use.
    • Follow laboratory quality, safety, calibration, data-integrity, and confidentiality requirements.
