The Campus Police Lieutenant is responsible for supervising and assisting assigned staff in the performance of police functions and duties, including administrative and investigative duties, public enforcement, protection and security. The lieutenant delegates assignments to officers and sergeants, reviews reports for accuracy and effectiveness, and oversees patrol activities, general and accident investigations, special assignments, and emergency responses. The lieutenant also performs police and patrol work in accordance with federal, state, county, and municipal laws and college policies.
This position is the senior police officer who may work one of three possible shifts and is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA), reporting crimes and incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer.
- Supervise assigned personnel and respond to or direct subordinate officers at scenes or significant incidents.
- Enforce state, county, and city ordinances to effectuate arrests; prepare misdemeanor and felony cases for prosecution; collect and preserve evidence; collaborate with detectives on follow‑up investigations; prepare written investigation materials.
- Respond to calls for assistance from community agencies.
- Receive and review reports prepared by subordinate officers for accuracy and content; prepare and submit annual budget requests; conduct risk assessments and inspections for crime prevention.
- Maintain liaison with college officials, community police, and fire/EMS departments to promote safety and security of the campus.
- Participate in interviews of applicants; plan, develop and conduct officer in‑service and POST‑certified training; train new officers and support staff; maintain performance standards in accordance with department, state, and federal guidelines.
- Appear in court to testify and present evidence in criminal cases and in college disciplinary hearings.
- Provide victims and witnesses information and assistance in accordance with laws and policies.
- Review and provide recommendations for campus‑wide crime alerts and initiate campus emergency mass notifications.
- Perform duties normally associated with a Sergeant, Campus Security Officer, Patrolman, or Communications Officer when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Five years of law enforcement experience with a minimum of three years in a police supervisory or investigative capacity.
- Twenty‑one years of age or older.
- Georgia POST Certified with Basic Law Enforcement Mandate and in good standing.
- Maintain annual certification and state training requirements and any additional requirements of the institution.
- Pass pre‑employment testing, criminal history check (no felony convictions or convictions of moral turpitude), background check, physical, drug test, psychological and/or polygraph exam, and credit history check.
- Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's license.
- Experience as a police supervisor or investigator.
- POST certified instructor.
$56,800 – $71,000 (salary offer will be dependent on candidate’s experience and qualifications, internal equity considerations, budget availability, and salary administration guidelines).
