Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician

The Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician is an essential role, responsible for performing automotive maintenance and services for fleet vehicles, equipment, and apparatus servicing Gwinnett County. This position requires consistent, reliable attendance and may involve work during emergencies, inclement weather, holidays, or other circumstances when normal operations are disrupted. The Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician may be assigned to light automotive, heavy truck/equipment, or fire apparatus.

Assignment is subject to change according to business needs.

Light Automotive Technician will be responsible for preventive maintenance services, diagnosing and repairing of automobiles and light trucks, including drivability, suspension systems, brake systems, engine, and transmission.

Heavy Equipment Technician will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing commercial and diesel vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery, including troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, reading and understanding hydraulic and electrical schematics, troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines (Cat, Cummins, Detroit), and maintaining routine maintenance schedules on all heavy equipment.

Fire Apparatus Technician will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing fire apparatus, including troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, reading and understanding hydraulic and electrical schematics, troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines (Cat, Cummins, Detroit), and maintaining routine maintenance schedules.

Hiring Salary Range:

  • Level I: $44,968.00 - $71,948.00 ($21.61 - $34.59/hour) - Grade B21(3)
  • Level II: $53,286.00 - $85,258.00 ($25.61 - $40.98/hour) - Grade B23(3)
  • Level III: $63,017.00 - $ ($30.39 - $48.47/hour) - Grade B32(3)

For eligible employees, Fleet Management will provide skills evaluation, preparation and funding for ASE certification/re-certification in accordance with County policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Level I:
    High School Diploma or G.E.D, valid Georgia driver's license, Commercial Driver's License within 12 months according to the area of assignment, 2 years of experience in mechanical and automotive maintenance, including electrical repair, system diagnosis, installation, and upfitting of various automotive systems. Must be able to work four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri) and be eligible to work on call as needed.

  • Level II:
    High School Diploma or G.E.D, four (4) years of experience in mechanical and automotive maintenance, including electrical repair, system diagnosis, installation, and upfitting of various automotive systems, valid Georgia driver's license, four (4) ASE certifications in area of assignment OR any combination of verifiable industry or manufacturer-specific certifications will be considered, at the department's discretion, instead of ASE Certifications when applicable.

    ASE Certifications will be required within 12 months of employment, Commercial Driver's License within 12 months according to area of assignment, A/C Refrigerant license or Section 609 certification from the Environmental Protection Agency within twelve (12) months, Emergency Vehicle Technician according to the area of assignment. Must be able to work four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri) and be eligible to work on call as needed.

  • Level III:
    High School Diploma or G.E.D, five (5) years of experience in mechanical and automotive maintenance, including electrical repair, system diagnosis, installation, and upfitting of various automotive systems, valid Georgia driver's license, ASE Master certification in the area of assignment OR any combination of verifiable industry or manufacturer-specific certifications will be considered, at the department's discretion, in lieu of ASE Certifications when applicable.

    ASE Certifications will be required within 12 months of employment, A/C Refrigerant license or Section 609 certification from the Environmental Protection Agency within twelve (12) months, Emergency Vehicle Technician according to the area of assignment, Commercial Driver's License within 12 months according to area of assignment. Must be able to work four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri) and be eligible to work on call as needed.

Other Job Requirements/Information:

  • This job is safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
  • This job may require on-call rotation according to area of assignment.
