Accounting Technician III

Basic PurposePerform paraprofessional technical work involving the maintenance and reporting of financial accounting data, including maintenance of accounts, ledgers, journals, registers, financial statement reconciliation, processing of invoices and expense vouchers, payroll data processing, and preparation of routine financial reports.
Typical Functions- Maintain accounting records, including ledgers, journals, registers, and individual accounts; classify and code revenues and expenditures for entry into appropriate records.
- Review and reconcile financial transactions; examine invoices, expense vouchers and source documents to verify obligations and post appropriate records.
- Prepare financial reports, statements and schedules of standard design.
- Maintain files of source documents and other information related to accounting activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of the position and agency operations.
Specialist level: independent responsibility for advanced technical accounting work, potentially maintaining all accounting records for a small fiscal unit or performing specialized tasks in a large fiscal division with separate accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll functions.
Education and ExperienceOne year of clerical, bookkeeping, or technical accounting experience plus three years of technical accounting work; or equivalent combination, substituting completion of six semester hours in accounting or bookkeeping per six months of required experience; or a vocational training course in accounting for one year only of the required experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and CompetenciesKnowledge of accounting procedures, terminology, business arithmetic, modern office methods and procedures. Ability to use office equipment such as calculators, personal computers, keyboards, and copiers; maintain and report financial accounting data; work independently and perform a wide range of technical accounting functions. Proficiency in English required.
