Job Description – Dental Hygienist (Contract)

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Dental Hygienist to join our healthcare team for a temporary contract assignment. The ideal candidate will provide preventive dental care, educate patients on maintaining optimal oral health, and assist dentists in delivering high-quality dental services. This position requires excellent clinical skills, strong communication abilities, and a patient-centered approach.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive dental hygiene assessments and patient screenings.
  • Conduct professional dental cleanings, including scaling, root planing, and polishing.
  • Obtain and review dental and medical histories.
  • Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) in accordance with state regulations.
  • Apply preventive treatments such as fluoride, sealants, and desensitizing agents.
  • Educate patients on oral hygiene techniques, nutrition, and preventive dental care.
  • Identify signs of oral diseases and communicate findings to the supervising dentist.
  • Assist dentists during examinations and specialized dental procedures as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic patient records.
  • Follow infection prevention, sterilization, and OSHA safety protocols.
  • Ensure treatment rooms, instruments, and equipment are properly cleaned and prepared.
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and professional patient experience.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
  • Current and unrestricted Dental Hygienist license in the applicable state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Ability to administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (if permitted by state law).
  • Strong knowledge of dental instruments, procedures, and infection control standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the dental team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a community health, government, military, or public health dental clinic.
  • Experience with Electronic Dental Record (EDR) systems such as Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with federal healthcare regulations and quality standards.
