POSITION SUMMARYThe Museum Director is responsible for all aspects of operations including budgeting, financial controls, programming and exhibition development, collection oversight, research, marketing, and staffing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ADMINISTRATION- Oversees day-to-day museum staff and activities
- Develops cooperative and collaborative efforts with tribal, federal, state, and local agencies
- Develops and manage contractual agreements for operations-related services
- Maintains official records and documents; ensures adequate record-keeping in all areas of operations
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations
- Informs Administration and appropriate tribal departments regarding museum operations
- Attends professional conferences, meetings, or seminars
- Oversees day-to-day financial operations
- Oversees and processes department payroll
- Develops and implement financial management policies and procedures with CN Tribal Administrator’s approval
- Develops the annual operating budget and manages museum within an approved budget
- Consults with the CN Tribal Administrator and CN Property and Procurement regarding major financial issues and expenditures
- Assists in the completion of independent review audits
- Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates employees; schedules employee work periods
- Provide direction to employees by assigning responsibilities, delegating duties, and allocating tasks
- Ensures that organizational policies and procedures comply with state and federal regulations regarding workplace employment
- Ensures employees are well-informed by maintaining open lines of communication
- Disciplines employees according to HR policies and procedures
- Oversees the museum’s marketing and public relations direction and strategies
- Promotes and manage museum image in the media and to the general public
- Promotes goals and objectives through positive relationships with the community, tribal agencies, other cultural organizations, and the media
- Monitors public perception and act accordingly
- Possesses a thorough understanding of social media platforms
- Oversees implementation and management of collection-related policies and procedures
- Ensures the preservation and care of collections in storage and on exhibit
- Approves new acquisition purchases within purchase limit
- Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing educational and public programs
- Develops networking relationships for educational and programming-related activities
- Assists in planning, designing, coordinating, and installing temporary and permanent exhibitions
- Develops networking relationships for exhibition-related activities
- Oversees security and maintenance of owned/leased property and equipment
- Develops and manage contractual agreements for security and maintenance-related services
- Help greet visitors and directs their inquiries to the appropriate area
- Prepares and participate in special events such as exhibit openings, programs, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned
The Director supervises the museum staff and reports to the CN Tribal Administrator.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThis position requires the ability to occasionally walk distances, sit and stand for long intervals, stoop, bend, and squat. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENTOffice environment. This position requires a weekly ROTATED four-hour shift on Saturday, and occasional work in the evenings and holidays, when needed. Occasional travel for research and professional meetings is required.
