Job Summary

Provides direct and indirect communication with the Pharmacist in Charge (PIC). Provides and reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of the PIC. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, state board of pharmacy, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards. Communicates with physicians and team members about changes in patient’s medications, including changes in orders, and formulary. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in orders and policy.

Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision.

Shift: Day

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and patient’s clinical condition.
  • Carries out physician order and changes in medication in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates ability, under direct supervision of provider or PIC, to gather and collect pertinent data on patients as per policy, to ensure medication orders are correct and safe per age, pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Under the direct supervision of the PIC, ensure medications and medication products are procured, received, stored, distributed, record keeping and disposition of inventory follow standards and regulations per the state’s board of pharmacy and hospital policy.
  • Demonstrates ability to use the computer system to log inventory, new orders and keep inventory safe, secure and orderly.
  • Keep up nursing license and regulatory needed certificates for ordering needed inventory and to meet state and federal requirements.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform processes and services to level of licensure.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers and physicians.
  • Consults other departments and PIC as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient, staff and provider’s medication needs to ensure a smooth integration of Drug Room services.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist providers with services requiring medication orders, new medications and increased formulary if needed.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients, their families, providers and staff with respect and dignity; ensures patient confidentiality.
  • Meets current documentation standards and policies.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas
  • Identifies and addresses needs in drug inventory and education of providers and staff.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Coordinates and supervises the drug room under direct supervision of PIC and DON.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the licensed scope of practice.
Requirements
Professional Requirements
  • Carries out physician’s orders in a timely manner.
  • Meets dress code standards of assigned nursing unit.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Ensures confidentiality of patients’ records.
  • Attends continuing education in‑services.
Education/Regulatory Requirements & Experience
  • Current Oklahoma RN or LPN licensure.
  • Previous work history that demonstrates steady attendance and punctuality required.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • CPR (BLS) can be obtained during orientation.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred.
