Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in planning maintenance projects and procuring necessary materials; assigns staff to tasks and carries out maintenance projects.
- Supervises crews in the work of constructing, maintaining and repairing City streets and storm drainage facilities and systems.
- Supervises the operation of all equipment.
- Insures that workers follow safety practices and procedures. Checks to see that protective devices and equipment are used where indicated.
- Keeps inventory, time and material records.
- Performs the duties and responsibilities of lower level employees when necessary and in the best interest of efficiency.
- Assumes the duties of the Street Superintendent in his absence.
- Inspects equipment to insure proper working condition.
- Assists in coordinating street construction activities which may require heavy street repair and construction equipment.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned employees. Assists superintendent in selecting new employees and in disciplining current employees. Trains employees in operating procedures, safety procedures, etc. as required or assigned.
- Assists Superintendent in making field surveys.
Responds to customer complaints.
DesiredMinimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
- Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience relating to construction, repair and maintenance of streets and/or highways, or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques commonly used in public works maintenance and repair activities and the ability to apply this knowledge to work situations;
Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. - Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to effectively instruct subordinates in the proper methods, procedures and safety precautions of construction, repair and maintenance work;
Ability to supervise the work of subordinates and direct jobs safely, efficiently, and economically;
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions;
Ability to work under varying and extreme weather conditions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials and the public;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
Ability to work safely;
Ability to exercise independent judgement;
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
Valid Oklahoma State driver’s license with a CDL endorsement and a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
Tools and Equipment UsedMotorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, manlift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, aeroil propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch, bulldozer, motor grader.
