Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is Northern Utah's Regional Water Supplier for: treated municipal water, wholesale irrigation water, retail secondary irrigation water, untreated industrial water and groundwater replacement water. About The Job

The Water Treatment Plant Operator controls the operation of treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use. To retain the job, in addition to acceptable performance, an operator must, within one year of hire, pass the Grade IV level exam administered by the State of Utah.

This position is classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.

Schedule

This position will work at one of our three locations (Ogden, Layton, or Bountiful). The shift includes rotating 12-hour shifts. The shift schedules are 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Shifts rotate every 28 days.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains daily treatment plant operating log.
  • Chemically flocculates incoming water to reduce silt, dirt, and harmful bacteria count.
  • Makes tours and observations a minimum of every two (2) hours of chemical feeders, pressure gauges, meters, pumps, air compressors, chlorine residual recorder, water recording and measuring devices, and all other mechanical equipment that has any movement and makes visual inspections of all processes.
  • Makes adjustments where needed.
  • Performs various water tests and records the results in a daily log every two (2) hours.
  • Obtains water samples of the raw, applied and treated water for tests as required—for turbidity, total alkalinity, pH, chlorine residual, taste and odor, color, and jar testing.
  • Maintains proper and safe levels in all reservoirs.
  • Must be capable of running the SCADA system and understanding when action is required and knowing how to properly respond.
  • Maintains adequate water flow through the plant at all times to avoid reverse flows through the effluent line.
  • Backwashes filters and enters backwash data on operating log as directed by Plant Manager.
  • Receives and stores all types of chemicals in proper container.
  • Starts standby equipment in case of failure of any piece of equipment.
  • Works rotating shift that may include eight or twelve-hour workdays, or any other shift deemed necessary.
  • Promotes and adheres to the District's core values (collaboration, ownership, mutual respect, professionalism, appreciation, safety, and sustainability).
Other Job Functions
  • Drains sedimentation basins and washes walls and floors to free algae growth and mud and all other foreign matter.
  • Cleans and paints equipment and structures.
  • Scrubs and polishes all floors in filter building, dusts furniture, pipes, handrails, pumps, air compressors, etc.
  • Cuts weeds and shovels snow from around equipment and walkways, performs maintenance on the plant and some minor repairs to plant equipment.
  • Conducts tours through the plants.
  • Maintains security of plant day and night.
  • Maintains ground area around treatment facilities as needed.
  • Performs all other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent with sufficient exposure to basic math and chemistry (preferred)

Experience:

No prior experience is required, although prior employment where basic reasoning skills were employed would be helpful. Training will be provided.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of basic arithmetic and some knowledge of elementary algebra; some knowledge of basic chemical processes, reactions, and lab procedures; some knowledge of basic mechanical maintenance and operations. Basic knowledge of federal and state water quality regulations.

Skills:

Basic computer skills. Critical thinking skills, judgment and decision making.
