Overview

Air Force Civilian Service is currently seeking two full‑time General Engineers to work in the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC), ICBM Systems Directorate, Advanced Planning Branch at Hill Air Force Base near Layton, Utah. These positions are for NH‑801‑03 with a typical 2026 salary range of $89,508 – $138,370. Recruitment, relocation, retention, and student loan incentives may be authorized.

Engineers in AFNWC solve highly complex problems to promote national security through nuclear deterrence. They work on the ground‑based leg of America’s Nuclear Triad. The AFNWC ICBM Systems Directorate manages the design, development, and integrated life‑cycle activities of ICBM weapon systems. The primary purpose of these positions is to serve as a technical engineer and systems engineer for the ICBM Advanced Capabilities & Integration Branch, focusing on advanced technology development, testing, processes, and environments.

• Join a diverse team of government employees, contractors, and stakeholders to develop, integrate, and implement technical solutions to highly complex problems, promoting teamwork, a modular approach, and on‑time delivery of future technologies to ICBM Weapon Systems.
• Provide technical guidance on development activities, including simulation & modeling advancements, experimental flight test planning and execution, radiation hardening capability development, cryptography, COMSEC, and other future capability/technology advancements.
• Engage in engineering concept planning; design and development; integration, evaluation, and auditing of architecture and early design content; identify and resolve highly complex technical problems leveraging digital and model‑based systems engineering.
• Review and participate in technical reviews of contractors, educational institutes, and national lab deliverables to ensure adherence to requirements, governance, and guidance; assess progress toward system architecture goals and objectives; identify risk areas; provide feedback to resolve challenges associated with architecting complex systems, including creating, testing, and/or approving potential system, sub‑system, and component designs.
• Assist the Program Manager with schedule, cost, performance, and acquisition requirements for technical programs within the Advanced Planning Branch and resolve issues encountered throughout the tech maturation process.
• Employ systems engineering and digital engineering methodologies; consider multiple aspects of the system and their impact on requirements.
• Engage with extended and geographically dispersed stakeholders, including subject matter experts from across the Department of Defense, non‑DoD government agencies, ICBM Systems Directorate, Air Force Global Strike Command, support contractors, educational institutions, national labs, and senior Department of Defense officials to ensure future ICBM technical activities are successfully planned, coordinated, and executed.

• Positions at this level typically have five years of relevant engineering experience.
• Experience with complex systems engineering, specifically early system development activities such as advancing technology maturation and evaluating risks for a large, complex, high‑dollar program.
• Strong technical skills in engineering sufficient to serve as a subject‑matter expert able to identify technical gaps and deficiencies in a baseline program that will require attention for the next iteration(s).
• System architecture design, modeling and simulation, ICBM flight test experience, familiarity with all aspects of ICBMs, and early technology‑level project experience, including RIO activities, cryptography, COMSEC.
• Depth of experience in integrating systems engineering efforts from multiple teams within an enterprise.
• Breadth of engineering experience is preferred.
• U.S. citizenship.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance and will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
• Must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) All Professional Engineering Positions, 0800, Individual Occupational Requirements.
• May be required to file an OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, annually, as required by the Ethics in Government Act, 1978.
• Must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, including achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within the required timeframe after appointment.
