Job Summary:

The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment, including dozers, front-end loaders, skid steers, backhoes, and scrapers, in support of excavation and underground utility construction projects. This position performs tasks such as mass excavation, grading, trenching, back filling, and material handling while working closely with pipe crews and other field personnel.

The role requires the ability to interpret grade stakes, plans, and specifications to achieve required elevations and project tolerances. The Equipment Operator is also responsible for conducting routine equipment inspections, performing basic maintenance, and reporting mechanical issues. This position plays a key role in maintaining job site safety, productivity, and quality standards.

Essential Functions:

• Operate heavy equipment including dozers, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, and scrapers safely and efficiently
• Perform excavation, grading, back filling, and material handling to meet project specs and production goals
• Read grade stakes, plans, and signals from grade checkers to maintain proper elevations and slopes
• Work closely with pipe crews and laborers to support installation of underground utilities
• Conduct daily equipment inspections (fluids, tracks/tires, leaks, safety items) and report issues right away
• Perform basic maintenance such as fueling, greasing, and cleaning equipment
• Maintain awareness of surroundings, including other workers, utilities, and underground hazards
• Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times
• Load trucks, move materials, and keep the job site organized and accessible
• Adjust to changing job conditions, including soil types, weather, and site constraints
• Communicate clearly with supervisors and crew members using hand signals, radios, or direct contact
• Help out with general labor tasks when needed to keep the job moving Perform other tasks as needed to support crew productivity and project progress

Supervisory Responsibility:

This role will not supervisor other crew members.

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 2+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction, excavation, or related field
• Demonstrated ability to safely operate equipment such as dozers, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, and/or scrapers
