Job SummaryThe Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. The NA provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The role includes age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of residents per their care plans, infection prevention and control policies, and personal protective equipment use.
Responsibilities encompass basic health care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital sign monitoring, psychosocial support, assistance with transfers, positioning, walking, range of motion and passive exercises. The NA also assists with food preparation, dining, and meal service, and encourages participation in wellness and recreational programs. Documentation of resident interactions, outcomes of care, behavior, activity, and dietary is required, as is communication of changing conditions to the charge nurse.
The NA may aid in procedures, collect non‑invasive specimens, provide housekeeping and laundry support, and participate in committees or task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred; not required.
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing or state certification within four months of appointment required; enrollment in a training program or endorsement acceptable. CNA training and certification provided by the facility.
- Completion of yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits; minimum of 12 hours annually.
- Maintenance of all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, certification and registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility and responsibilities, the role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report, proof of a valid driver’s license, and medical qualification to perform essential driving functions per the Sanford Driving Policy.
