The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long term care, providing resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to an assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The CNA provides assistance with basic health‑care needs including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, providing psychosocial support, and other personal care.
The CNA assists the resident in transferring, repositioning, walking using correct techniques and equipment, performs range‑of‑motion and passive exercises, prepares food and dining, and encourages participation in wellness and recreational programs. The CNA documents resident interactions, communicates changing conditions to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive specimens, performs housekeeping and laundry services, and may participate in departmental committees as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of employment by enrollment in a training program or the process of obtaining certification through Endorsement. CNA training and certification are required and provided by the facility.
- Satisfactorily completes yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits; a minimum of 12 hours each year is required.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility responsibilities, this role may require a Sanford Category II driver classification: a motor vehicle report, proof of a valid driver’s license, and medical qualification to perform the essential driving functions per the Sanford Driving Policy.
