Austin Gastroenterology is seeking an experienced Lead Medical Assistant. This position may be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas, including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. The assistant provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services.
Responsibilities- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned: checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting patients with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting patient history, checking vital signs, performing screenings per provider guidelines, assisting providers as needed, charting, phone triage, medication administration, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls, and providing pertinent information; prescription verifications with physician orders.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities: sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, completing forms/requisitions, scheduling appointments, patient check‑in and check‑out, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, managing and updating charts to ensure information is complete and filed appropriately.
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities: respecting/promoting patient rights, responding appropriately to emergency codes, sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
- Supervises and coordinates the daily activities of the medical assistant team, including scheduling, training and any necessary performance discussions.
- Trains medical assistants and provides ongoing coaching and mentorship.
- Cover clinical shifts or reassign duties in response to unexpected absences.
- Travels regularly within the region to multiple locations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Education:
High school diploma or GED, medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a college course in medical assisting. - Experience:
Minimum of five years of recent experience in a medical facility as a medical assistant required. Preferably five years of internal experience at GI Alliance. Experience in a gastroenterology practice is preferred. - Requirements for Level III Status:
Should be a leader and viewed as a leader by other staff; no performance or disciplinary actions in the last year; serves as mentor/trainer for new hires; considered a subject‑matter expert by peers, management, and physicians. - Other Performance Requirements:
Knowledge of health care field and EMR systems; skill in performing medical assistance tasks appropriately; skill in written and verbal communication; skill in sharing patient education effectively; ability to learn and retain patient care practices; ability to project a pleasant and professional image; ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks; ability to multi‑task; ability to demonstrate compassion and caring when dealing with others.
