City Water And Wastewater Utility Operator
Performs mid-level moderately complex work. This position maintains and operates the entire City's related facilities/equipment within the water and wastewater utility system in a safe, effective, and efficient manner, using technical expertise, practices and servicing required for plant equipment, lift stations, electrical techniques and safety procedures. Operator must be able to be scheduled for "on-call" rotation and is subject to after hour call outs.
Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Required Qualifications
Troubleshoots and performs complex technical repairs on major machinery and mechanical equipment at the city's water and two wastewater treatment plants and associated facilities.
Maintains and operates electrical distribution systems, 11 100kW
-750 kW stationary and 2 mobile (trailer mounted) generators.
Disassembles, cleans, overhauls and rebuilds motors, electric powered centrifugal and positive displacement blowers, valves (PRV's), sewage and chemical feed pumps, filters, and other plan equipment.
Dismantles pumps and performs repairs in all extreme weather conditions, such as cleaning and replacing impellers, repacking stuffing boxes and mechanical seals, tightening packing glands, and replacing bearings, using hand or power tools.
Examines and troubleshoots pumps for malfunctioning, and to locate excessive damage or premature wear, such as blown packing, misalignment of pump shaft, slipping drive belts, worn bearings, or need for lubrication.
Receives, stores and handles petroleum-based materials such as grease, degreasers, and oils.
Performs precision alignments on motor shafts using dialer indicators, feeler gauges, and shims.
Operates hand tools and equipment including welding machine, air compressor, jackhammer, forklift, and other related equipment.
Develops and maintains preventive maintenance program in regard to the facilities and equipment in the utility system.
Performs preventive maintenance, and repairs all electric circuits related to water and wastewater equipment.
Programs and calibrates all VFD's and Soft Starts for motor up 200hp.
Tests, troubleshoots, locates, and calibrates, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of electrical and electronic systems, components and devices; rebuilds equipment to manufacturer's specifications, including motor controllers, transmitters, level instruments, audio-tone transmitters, and devices using operational performance standards, and standard and specialized testing equipment; corrects defects in instrumentation.
Operates and coordinates heavy equipment, such as boom trucks, dump trucks, cranes, and flatbed trucks.
Monitors inventory of materials and equipment. Recommends and specifies products needed and requisitions approved equipment and maintenance supplies.
Maintains assigned pump and motor truck in proper working condition and ensure all tools, testing equipment are organized and maintained and in safe operating condition.
Performs on-call duties by responding to water or wastewater facilities/equipment failures 24/7; repair issues at night or during storm events where electrical and mechanical failure can occur.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma or its equivalent.
Minimum of two years full-time related work experience and/or technical training.
Required Certificate and Licenses
Valid Class "C" Driver's License from any U.S. State. Must be able to obtain a Texas license within 90 days of hire. (Approximately 60% driving time in a company vehicle.)
TCEQ "I" Wastewater Collection License or must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
TCEQ "D" Water Distribution License or must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
Valid Class "B" Commercial Texas driver's license at time of hire or must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
Must be able to obtain a Basic first aid certificate within one year of the hire date.
