Position: Elementary School Nurse - for the 2026/27 School Year

Title

Elementary School Nurse (2026/27 School Year)

Purpose

To strengthen the educational development of children by assisting them to maintain, improve, or adapt to their health status by providing direct professional nursing services, first aid, and illness and emergency care.

Required Qualifications
  • Kansas Licensed Registered Nurse
  • Health and Vaccination Certificate on file in the District Office (after an employment offer is made)
  • Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years of School Nursing Experience
Essential Functions
  • Organizes and conducts yearly state‑mandated health screenings for vision and hearing and state recommended scoliosis screening in conjunction with other 3 district nurses.
  • Organizes and conducts yearly state‑mandated Growth & Development program for grades 4‑5.
  • Organizes and coordinates with Smith Dental Clinic all National Children’s Dental Health Month activities.
  • Enrollment: process each student’s cumulative health records, immunizations, and physicals.
  • Input data within 30 days of enrollment and monitor students’ immunization/physical exam compliance per KS state law and district policy.
  • Provides emergency first aid to all students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintains AED.
  • Evaluates and assesses health needs of students.
  • Follow the district’s Work's Compensation Procedures.
  • Administers medication with appropriate documentation.
  • Perform nursing procedures within their scope of practice.
  • Maintains a well‑equipped and supplied health room within assigned yearly budget.
  • Conducts health‑related presentations for students and staff and serves as a resource person on health issues.
  • Organizes CPR (re) certification, AED training, Blood Borne Pathogen education and epi‑pen demonstration for school staff.
  • Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
  • Assists the building principal/secretaries/counselor by performing clerical duties or other tasks as may be assigned or needed.
  • Supervises the collection and dissemination of attendance data daily.
  • Notify the Principal in cases of chronic absenteeism, tardiness, truancy or other cases as needed.
  • Malpractice insurance shall be obtained and reimbursed yearly by the District.
  • Completes all continuing education units as required for KS state licensure or additional certifications.
  • Compiles, organizes, and maintains health concerns lists, health care plans, and student health records.
  • Organizes, conducts, and documents all health‑related annual continuing education for staff and faculty.
  • Maintains a high level of caring competence, ethical behavior, and confidentiality.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to enter data into a computer and to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone
  • Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in typical classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
  • Ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead

Contract for the duration of school year with a 14‑day notice required to resign
