Stewards VISTA:
Brown v. Board of Education NHP Y1

Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park preserves and shares the history of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that ended legal school segregation. Opened in 2004 in Topeka, the park is expanding to Summerton and includes five affiliated “Brown Five” sites across Kansas, South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington, DC—communities whose cases shaped Brown v. Board of Education. Located in Kansas’s capital city—about 30 miles from Lawrence and 60 miles from Kansas City—Topeka offers an affordable cost of living, a strong sense of community, and access to cultural, sports, and entertainment opportunities.

We seek a detail-oriented, organized candidate with experience in communications, education, or public history—especially skills in curriculum development, digital media, and partnership building. Working with park leadership, the member will develop an interpretive strategic plan in collaboration with “Brown Five” communities, engage in grant research, develop curriculum and interpretive media, and develop an outreach plan.

Member Duties

The member will build organizational capacity by developing materials for staff to implement community outreach, building systems for volunteer engagement, and creating educational curriculum. They will work on capacity building activities, such as expanding the reach of the park's current education program by researching school districts and preparing outreach plans for those districts within a two-hour drive of the park. The member will develop communication plans for staff to engage with the "Brown Five" communities to assist in their capacity building—whether that is to create new interpretive materials, such as historical research for text for signs, web pages, brochures, or tour plans.

As the park is emerging into its expanded purpose and mission, the member will be a valuable contributor to projects across the breadth of the Brown v. Board of Education decisions and their legacies in American history since 1954.
