Job DescriptionInstruction & Course Development:
Teach one 5- or 6-hour course or two 3-hour courses per semester of 100- or 200-level French (60%)
- Prepare appropriate syllabi for all courses following departmental and university requirements.
- Assist the French Language Program Director in curriculum development for 1st-/2nd-year French courses for both in-person and asynchronous versions of the given courses.
- Prepare and present course and class activities (lectures, discussions, videos for online courses, etc.). In case of absence, the lecturer/program associate must make arrangements for an appropriate substitute.
- Provide examinations, papers, presentations, and other means to evaluate student performance. Grade assignments in a timely manner, provide students with regular and precise information about their progress in the course, and give students clear information about how to improve their performance in the course.
- Conduct assessments of student learning and comply with department requests for course data on assessment practices and learning outcomes .
- Be available to students for advising, consultation, and supervision.
- Report to the faculty member or other academic staff designated by the Chair for teaching supervision, support, and guidance, as needed.
- Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.
- Treat students with courtesy and with respect for their rights, including, but not limited to, academic freedom and those rights as outlined in the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities.
Program Coordination - The administration and coordination of two of the four multi-section courses in the 1st-year or 2nd-year French language sequence, under supervision of French Language Program Director (40 %)
- Develop common course materials shared by all instructors, including (but not necessarily limited to) the updating of established materials such as the course syllabus, online homework, exam guides, and rubrics and grading criteria.
- Manage technology used for the courses (e.g., Canvas, Mind Tap), including setting up templates of daily online homework for courses supervised and assisting instructors with set up and management of their Canvas sites.
- Oversee the preparation of common exams/quizzes/assignments; develop schedule for instructors to develop these materials.
- Organize peer communication among instructors to facilitate the development and sharing of teaching materials and post shared materials on Canvas.
- Organize finalized common quizzes/exams/assignments to be photocopied for distribution to all instructors or delivered in online format.
- Assist with professional development of instructors, including participation in new GTA orientation, mentoring instructors in assigned courses, conducting class observations (as needed), providing feedback and support on teaching and class management.
- Manage inquiries related to the courses supervised and assist students in those courses with any concerns.
- Maintain scheduled office hours to handle these administrative duties.
- Help organize and/or participate in some extracurricular activities offered by the department.
- Consult with the French Language Program Director for supervision, support and guidance.
