Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
The job of Instructional Assistant - PE is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for improving student success in academics; adapting classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising instructor; assisting teachers with instructional and clerical tasks; modeling study skills for students; tutoring students and clarifying assignments; and maintaining instructional areas.
This job reports to Building Administrator, PE Department Instructors.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher (e.g. worksheets, projects, teaching aids, etc.) for supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Administer a variety of instructional activities (e.g. tests, homework assignments, make-up work, paper grading, etc.) for supporting instructors in the classroom and/or during physical education classes.
- Attend meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. workshops, division meetings, etc.) for acquiring and conveying information relative to job functions.
- Maintain instructional and student records (e.g. student assignments, portfolios, assessments, etc.) for providing accurate, documented progress in student learning.
- Maintain instructional areas, equipment and supplies (e.g. gym area, locker rooms, etc.) for ensuring availability of items and providing a safe learning environment.
- Monitor individual students and groups of students in a variety of school settings (e.g. classrooms, labs, gym area, locker rooms, etc.) for maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provide direct instructional services to students under the supervision of the assigned classroom teacher (e.g. small group work, individual instruction, supervision of testing, monitoring progress, etc.) for presenting and supporting learning outcomes.
- Respond to emergency situations (e.g. injured students, student disputes, etc.) for resolving immediate safety concerns and directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Respond to inquiries from a variety of people (e.g. students, instructors, administrators, etc.) for solving problems, providing information and referral.
- Submit orders for supplies and equipment, as directed by instructor (e.g. lab equipment, materials for instructional projects, etc.) for ensuring availability of inventory for student learning projects and processes.
- Work extended hours if needed for providing student supervision before and/or after school and on playgrounds.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adhering to safety practices; standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; effective interaction with diverse levels of learning ability; solving problems; and oral and written communication skills with a diverse student population.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include concepts of grammar and punctuation; basic math; age appropriate activities; health and safety standards; concepts of student development and learning; and, subject matter, terminology, techniques, equipment and materials used in the assigned instructional area.
