The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is led by Secretary Janet Stanek and combines public health, environment, and health care finance—including Medicaid—under one agency to holistically improve and protect the health of Kansans.
Position Summary & Responsibilities >The Medicaid Medical Director – Behavioral Health is a key clinical and administrative leader within Kansas’ behavioral health Medicaid system.
Responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with KDHE staff, KDADS staff, MCO staff, and provider agencies to enhance care quality, strengthen system oversight, and support coordinated care delivery.
- Work with the Medicaid Medical director, State Medicaid director, Commissioner for Behavioral Health, and other leadership to guide policy, clinical practice, and system improvement efforts across Kansas’s behavioral health continuum.
- Participate in committees and meetings with internal and external stakeholders, strengthening programming for CCBHC, PRTF, and related services.
- Review existing services to ensure alignment and compliance with the Medicaid State Plan, Medicaid policy, and other state and federal regulations.
- Provide leadership and guidance on primary care and behavioral health integration initiatives and ensure compliance with community standards of care, state and federal laws, and regulatory requirements.
- Education: High School diploma or GED required.
- Licensing & Certification:
- Doctorate degree, MD or DO.
- Completion of a residency in an approved psychiatric training program.
- Minimum five years of clinical experience.
- Current active medical license in Kansas.
- Knowledge and experience in behavioral health medications and innovative treatment services.
- Knowledge of regulations, policies, and ethical considerations related to behavioral health management.
- Ability to work with internal and external physicians, Utilization Management teams, and non‑physician department leaders.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills to build relationships with staff and community partners.
- Knowledge of managed care systems and familiarity with Kansas Medicaid.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
- Proofreading, editing, and attention to detail.
Hourly pay: $150.00 per hour (salary may vary based on education, experience, or qualifications).
