Engineer – Automation Engineering
We are looking for an engineer to join the Automation Engineering Department at Eli Lilly, Foundry. The engineer will provide automation support for operating areas across the site and for capital projects, focused on Process Automation to deliver right‑first‑time facility start‑up and ongoing manufacturing support.
The Engineer is a technical expert who collaborates with partners to influence and implement within the process control organization. Responsibilities include providing Automation, Process Controls, and Data Historian expertise, serving as the main Data Architect to ensure proper data contextualization, and supporting historian systems across the site.
Key Objectives / Deliverables- Technical expertise in automation and process controls.
- Mentor process control team on design, controls philosophy, implementation, and commissioning.
- Coordinate process control work implementation.
- Develop and implement the Automation Engineering Project Plan.
- Collaborate technically with Site Area leads and System Integrator on functional requirements and design specifications.
- Provide periodic status updates to Project Management.
- Work with Engineering, Operations, and cross‑functional groups to troubleshoot issues, update OSI PI, and perform routine maintenance.
- Maintain system health and respond to issues as they arise.
- Develop SOPs, work instructions, and job aids for OSI PI, alarm management, and notification systems.
- Provide subject‑matter expertise on data historian design, development, testing, validation, and lifecycle support.
- Ensure solutions meet site standards and data‑management strategies.
- Design, configure, and test OSI PI platform, including server infrastructure, integration with Emerson Delta
V DCS, interfaces with BMS, PLCs, Remote IO, and Asset Frame design. - Support electronic systems such as plant historians for process automation data capture.
- Maintain validated state of control systems per Lilly quality standards, including validation strategies and documentation.
- Provide automation support for capital projects and new product introductions.
- Promote automation to improve productivity, operational efficiency, and compliance.
- Develop a network of corporate contacts and leverage expertise when needed.
- Set and enforce standards for rigor in automation work products in coordination with consultants.
- Demonstrate initiative, planning, organization, and prioritization skills.
- Show strong technical curiosity, problem‑solving ability, and continuous improvement mindset.
- Influence peers and partners effectively.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Understand GMP, regulatory requirements, and computer system validation.
- B.S. in Engineering with experience in Automation Engineering, preferably in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- 5+ years of experience in biopharma engineering, operations, or manufacturing.
- Authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.
- Experience designing, developing, commissioning, and qualifying highly automated greenfield manufacturing sites with SCADA, DCS, and MES systems.
- Experience with OSI PI and related applications.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity and IoT considerations in managing systems.
- Awareness of integrating Delta
V, BMS, PLC/HMI, and similar control systems. - Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as BACnet/IP, Modbus, HART, OPC DA/UA, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, RIO.
- Experience with backup, restore, and disaster recovery.
- Experience with electronic document management systems (Kneat, Valgenesis, ALM).
- Configuration of alarm management systems such as Log Mate, Win
911. - Experience with root‑cause analysis methodologies.

Compensation and BenefitsActual compensation will depend on education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage range is $64,500 - $167,200. Full‑time employees may also be eligible for a company bonus and a comprehensive benefits program including 401(k), pension, vacation, medical, dental, vision, prescription drug coverage, flexible spending accounts, life and death insurance, paid time off, and well‑being benefits.
