Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry (LMF), a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development that combines research and manufacturing in a single location to optimize processes, increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, and reduce costs and environmental impact.
- The LMF Utilities Operations Supervisor oversees utility operations to ensure safe and uninterrupted generation and distribution of utility services to meet the Foundry’s needs.
- Provide strong leadership and direct supervision of operators, including hiring, training, coaching, and development.
- Integrate daily oversight of processes, equipment, facilities, and personnel to safely produce quality products.
- Troubleshoot, solve problems, propose solutions, and support, implement improvements within areas of responsibility.
- Lead a team/shift that operates and maintains all utility systems (high purity water, compressed air, steam, chilled water, glycol, city water and sewers).
- Monitor and respond to UMS alarms to maintain safe, compliant, and cost-efficient operations.
- Safety — Drive safety culture and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) compliance in daily work.
- Safety Programs — Comply with all HSE aspects and support departmental HSE plans; participate in safety programs and self-assessments; lead monthly safety meetings; develop safety strategy and foster accountability; engage the team in safety initiatives.
- Maintain sufficient technical proficiency of unit operations to solve problems and conduct investigations (safety, environmental, quality).
- Ensure operators are trained, qualified, and fit for daily work; ensure adherence to established procedures and policies (safety, environmental, quality, production, human resources, maintenance).
- Maintain equipment and facilities in a state fit for use and keep documentation accurate with good documentation practices.
- Maintain a state of inspection readiness and report any service level agreement excursions as observations.
- Authorize overtime to keep the shift properly staffed for safe and compliant operations.
- Ensure utility operations are performed in a timely, proactive, compliant, and cost-effective manner.
- Engage in process team initiatives; evaluate proposed changes in processes or equipment and influence outcomes and design.
- Support communications between shifts and functional teams to sustain and improve communication.
- Ensure continuous supply of utilities to customers within service level agreements.
- Provide leader-led training to qualify employees to operate utilities process systems.
- Apply technical expertise to maintain plant utility systems in a high state of readiness and participate in upgrade/replacement strategy development.
- Make and communicate decisions clearly to staff and management, conveying rationale.
- Collaborate with Supervisors, Process Teams, and Operators to identify opportunities for targeted continuous improvement.
- Communicate floor issues and operation status to process owners in a timely manner.
- Understand the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and site outage practices.
- Coordinate with maintenance leadership to create/improve job plans and schedules.
- Act as a liaison between Process Teams and Operators; partner with engineering to refine UMS operator actions during alarms.
- Oversee development of performance management plans for operations personnel; conduct at least three check-ins annually (objectives, mid-year, final review).
