- PART TWO: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY
- Position Objective
The manager, in support and at the direction of the AVP of Inpatient Clinical Operations, has 24/7 accountability and is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and clinical operations of the Medical Surgical Unit and Short Stay Unit The manager supervises the work of the nursing staff, to include Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNAs), and Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs). The manager works to continually promote and sustain a high performing, professional, and efficient department while ensuring continuous quality care, patient and staff safety, and optimal patient access.
- Performance Expectation
- To support the staff clinically, the manager demonstrates proficiency in all Performance Standards/Expectations of the staff RN.
- To ensure high quality care, oversee staff development, competency and education within the department:
- Communicate standards of care, regulatory requirements and hospital policies to staff and hold them accountable for compliance.
- Evaluate staffand provide feedback and mentoring.
- Complete staff evaluations and review with AVP, Inpatient Clinical Operations as needed.
- Inform the AVP, Inpatient Clinical Operations when need arises to counsel employees for deficient practices and/or standards.
- Incorporate evidence based practice into the department.
- Facilitate educational programs for unit specific competencies.
- To ensure patient access is met in a cost effective manner:
- Manage the hiring process to ensure adequacy of staffing and hire appropriately.
- Complete and maintain staffing schedule.
- Oversee the department payroll.
- To support a patient centered environment:
- Administer nursing care to patients, as needed, to maintain clinical skills.
- Ensure quality and appropriateness of patient care. Facilitate and monitor activities related to the delivery of patient care, assuring evidence based practice and nursing practice standards are achieved.
- Continually assess processes, and adjust as needed, to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
- Ensure all decision making has the patient as the focus.
- Monitor patient satisfaction and make appropriate adjustments within the department.
- To provide a professional and safe environment for staff:
- Engage staff in decision making and planning for the department.
- Address concerns proactively, timely and effectively.
- Ensure policies and procedures are current and evidenced based.
- Maintain standards that align departmental practice with AMSN (Academy of Medical‑Surgical Nurses).
- Ensure the environment is maintained appropriately (equipment in good repair, cleaned appropriately etc.).
- To ensure financial viability of the department:
- Develop and maintain budgets for the unit. Monitor revenues and expenses.
- Monitor documentation for timeliness and adequacy while implementing changes as needed.
- Monitor utilization of stocking and supply to ensure appropriate use and maintenance of products and equipment.
- To adequately support the AVP, Inpatient Clinical Operations:
- Provide input into short and long range department goals and objectives.
- Perform other duties as requested.
- To ensure personal growth and development:
- Proactively participate in self-appraisal and self-reflection.
- Participate in educational opportunities.
- Keep current in professional and leadership readings.
