Performs assigned functions to maintain overall appearance and value of the facilities landscape to provide a safe, enjoyable environment for patients, visitors and employees. Maintain and repair grounds equipment, make repairs to roads, road structures and sidewalks. Plant, fertilize, and prune landscape plants to maintain their health and appearance.

  • Ensures landscaping is free of litter and debris by sweeping, raking, washing the lots and entrances, and emptying trash containers. Observe the overall condition and report problems or deteriorating conditions to the Supervisor.
  • Operate equipment in a safe and proper manner, which includes; tractors, mowers, wheeled loader, brush chipper, trucks, powered sweeper, other small engine equipment to maintain the landscape. Complete small landscape/hardscape construction projects including, tree/limb removal and paving repairs/installation, irrigation, sod cutting/installation. Incumbents of positions in this series trim, prune, cut and/or plant flowers, bushes, etc.; seed, water, cut, weed and/or fertilize lawns, flower beds, shrubs, etc.;

    spray lawns, flower beds, etc. with fertilizers or pesticides; excavate grounds; clear and perform minor repairs to roadways, parking lots and walks; and perform related work as required. Provide for the care and maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, flower beds, walks, roadways and parking lots.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, identify problems/breakdowns and make necessary repairs to grounds equipment.
  • Be aware of snow, ice and adverse weather conditions. Respond when necessary to remove snow or ice from roads, sidewalks and parking lots by plowing, moving snow and applying sand or salt at a rate necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Ensure that snow removal equipment is in good working order.
  • Make daily rounds of the landscape to ensure areas of responsibility are free of litter and debris by sweeping (hand and power), raking, washing the lots and entrances and emptying trash containers.
  • Make recommendations on and initiate new plantings and landscape changes to enhance the value and appearance.
  • Basic irrigation audits and repairs.
  • Plant and transplant trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers in a professional manner as assigned.
  • Fertilizes, prunes, edges, mulches, weeds and inspects for pest damage; trees, shrubs and other plant material to maintain strong healthy plants. Plants/transplants trees, shrubs, flowers and lawns.
  • Mow, trim, fertilize and edge turf areas to promote a strong, healthy, uniform lawn.
  • Assist in the training of new employees in the performance of these assignments.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly Grounds Shop.
  • Road, sidewalks and construction hardscape repairs as required. Installing and fixing sprinklers and lighting.
  • Perform the following duties to include, but not limited to work orders, assisting in emergency situations and assistance to other trades when necessary.
  • Participates in on-call rotation support as applicable.
  • Responsible for operating groundskeeping and heavy construction equipment for maintaining and repairing campus grounds, irrigation systems, walkways and parking areas.
  • Operates equipment to include tractors, mowers, wheeled loaders, trucks, sweeper, chain saws and various mechanized equipment to maintain landscape.
  • Initiates recommendations for improvements to existing plantings and proposals for new plantings.
  • Provides on-call coverage during the winter months when inclement weather is predicted and in rotating weekend coverage. Responds when necessary to remove snow or ice from roads, sidewalks and parking lots by plowing, shoveling, moving snow and applying sand and salt at a rate necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Ensures that snow removal equipment is in good working order.

    Monitor the activities of employees involved in groundskeeping work to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Knowledge of building systems and operations, as well a general trade experience desired.
  • Sand certified upon hire.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required with 2 years of experience in grounds maintenance, tree care, site work, operating larger equipment and any other closely related field required.
  • Associate's degree in Horticulture, Forestry of related field preferred.
  • State pesticide license and CDL preferred.
  • Masonry knowledge preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required in accordance with D-H’s Driver Disqualifications Guidelines.
  • Obtain ASHE Health Care Physical Environment Worker Certification upon hire.
  • Obtain Medical DOT Card upon hire.
