YOUTH COUNSELOR I-III
State of New Hampshire – Department of Health and Human Services, Division for Children, Youth, & Families – Sununu Youth Services Center
- Manchester, NH. Multiple positions – Full Time – All Shifts.
Base pay range: $19.57/hr – $33.47/hr (actual pay based on skills and experience).
Plus Direct Care Pay & shift differential when applicable:
- Direct Care: $.133/hr
- 2nd Shift: $1.20/hr
- 3rd Shift: $1.50/hr
- Weekend: $2.00/hr
Provide a safe and secure environment for adjudicated or detained juveniles, coordinate and supervise daily activities, assess behavior, and support rehabilitation through counseling and treatment planning.
ResponsibilitiesYC I:
- Constant surveillance to prevent incidents and manage contraband.
- Handle volatile situations, including suicide attempts and assaults.
- Organize recreational, motivational, and educational activities.
- Document behaviors, monitor medication effects.
- Assist with escapes and incidents within facility limits.
- Communicate with external agencies and internal staff.
- Supervise during off‑site appointments.
- Operate surveillance and access control equipment.
- Complete mandatory training: 40 hours of in‑service annually after academy.
YC II:
- All YC I duties.
- Develop treatment plans and conduct individual counseling.
- Maintain comprehensive case records (PPRs, reports, notes).
- Conduct background checks for visitors.
- Support residents in job search and life skills.
YC III:
- All YC II duties.
- Design and facilitate therapeutic groups.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate subordinate Youth Counselors.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid New Hampshire driver’s license (if transporting residents).
- Applicable experience as specified for each level (see below).
Level I: 0 yrs work experience. Equivalent to one year of education or experience after high school.
Level II: 1 year of education and experience after high school.
Level III: 2.5 years of education and experience after high school in related fields (e.g., sociology, psychology, human services).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in camp counseling, scouting, school or church programs, or similar youth services.
- Background in behavioral science, social work, or criminal justice.
- Experience with mentally or physically challenged youth.
Complete the Juvenile Justice Academy within twelve months of hire for the corresponding level.
Career AdvancementBroad Group Level advancement is available for Level III (criteria: satisfactory evaluation, no discipline, approvals from supervisory staff, complete case records).
