Pay Range$17.81/hour - $23.39/hour. Trainee Status: $17.19 per hour.
Winter Maintenance IncentiveEarn up to $5,000. Half paid at start of November 2025 winter plowing season and remainder paid at end of March 2026.
SummaryPerforms skilled year-round highway maintenance activities involving operation and servicing complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry-level personnel and small work crews for the NH State Highway System.
Your Experience CountsEach additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and vice versa.
Minimum Qualifications- Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL-A) with appropriate tank endorsement.
- Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards established by the Department of Transportation.
- Offers of employment are conditional upon obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless already employed by the State of New Hampshire.
- Receive a negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with federal regulations.
- Ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. intermittently.
- Possession of a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day.
Candidates with a valid CDL-B who can obtain a CDL-A with endorsements within one year of hire, and otherwise satisfy the minimum requirements, may be considered and hired in trainee status.

- Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance/construction equipment, machinery, and vehicle components used in construction and maintenance of the State Highway System, including snow and ice removal, flood mitigation, road surface seasonal treatments, and various projects.
- Maintain assigned equipment and perform necessary field adjustments, emergency repairs and troubleshooting to maintain serviceability and optimal operations; report issues and concerns to supervisor when appropriate.
- Observe winter storm road conditions and independently determine appropriate action for plowing and spreading abrasives or chemicals based on safety and environmental policies; provide training and supervision to entry-level personnel.
- Supervise, train and review the work of small crews, entry-level workers, and contractors to ensure maintenance methods, safety and environmental practices comply with Department policy and best management practices; work with immediate supervisor to address personnel issues and recommend improvements.
- Supervise the work of others and perform routine highway and road maintenance under adverse conditions, with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and during disaster situations to ensure public safety.
- Traverse varied terrain and perform tasks involving heavy physical labor, including drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/repair; ability to lift/carry material up to 50 lbs. regularly.
- Respond immediately to perform winter maintenance or other traffic emergency activities on a 24-hour basis throughout the year.
