Transportation Engineer 1 will complete ODOT’s Transportation Civil Engineering Program, including a 12‑month training plan and scheduled rotation through Planning & Engineering, Construction and Highway Maintenance.

- You will receive hands‑on transportation training and experience needed to further your career as an engineer with ODOT.
ODOT’s Transportation Civil Engineering (TCE) Program offers engineering college graduates a great opportunity to begin, or continue, a career in the Civil Engineering field. The TCE Program provides a thorough introduction to the department’s core engineering disciplines with hands‑on training in all concentrations of Civil Engineering. ODOT engineers develop traffic models, environmental mitigation documents and create construction plans for upcoming roadway, bridge, culvert, safety, drainage and other projects.
They oversee projects in the field, ensuring contractors follow specifications. ODOT engineers develop simple and complex traffic management designs, manage the motor vehicle fleet and oversee winter operations critical to Ohio’s economy. TCEs receive 12 months of experience and training with a Professional Engineer in Construction, Design, Planning and Highway Management, including training opportunities in GEOPAK Microstation, Surveying/CADD, Project Manager Training, Bridges, Safety and hundreds of other options.
Upon successful completion of the 12‑month TCE Program and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, TCEs can advance to the next level of the Engineering series.
ODOT’s Southwest Ohio District Capital Programs Administration manages capital projects for 4,700 lane miles of pavement, 1,400 bridges and 7,100 culverts across the district. District 8 offers broad opportunities for engineers in urban, suburban and rural locations.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree in engineering; accepted for Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by the Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors.

All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one‑year probationary period.
Position will be filled pursuant to the provision of the OCSEA/AFSCME contract.
