The Detailing Coordinator is responsible for managing the technical documentation and communication between the design team and the fabrication shop. This role ensures that all shop drawings and 3D models are accurate, compliant with AISC/AWS standards, and delivered on schedule to support fabrication timelines. The Detailing Coordinator serves as the primary technical point of contact for RFIs (Requests for Information), manages the submittal process, and ensures that the digital information within production management systems (Tekla Power Fab) is accurate and up to date.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded from time to time as management deems necessary.

  • Manage relationships with third-party detailing firms, ensuring adherence to George Steel standards, project specifications, and delivery schedules.
  • Assist Project Managers in identifying and quantifying scope changes discovered during the detailing process.
  • Provide technical clarification to the Plant Manager and shop supervisors on complex geometries or fabrication requirements shown on drawings.
  • Perform quality checks on shop and erection drawings for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with contract documents before they are released to the shop.
  • Identify, draft, and track RFIs to resolve design discrepancies with the architects and engineers of record, preventing fabrication delays.
  • Oversee the import/export of model data (BIM) into Tekla Power Fab to ensure seamless transitions from detailing to shop drawings, and required material procurement to CNC processing.
  • Attend BIM coordination meetings, representing George Steel's detailing interests to facilitate finalization of fabrication drawings and identify clashes between structural steel, MEP, and related trades.
  • Coordinate the transfer of BIM models to owners, general contractors, and other trades during the drawing development stage to support project-wide BIM coordination requirements.
  • Manage and coordinate the submittal and approval process, ensuring all drawings are reviewed by the appropriate parties and returned within the project timeline, and that all documentation is submitted, tracked, and approved according to the project schedule.
  • Maintain organized, up-to-date design and shop drawing logs within Tekla Power Fab to ensure the shop always works from the latest revision.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating company-specific detailing standards and "standard connection" libraries.
