What You Will Be Doing

  • Gain exposure to culvert, bridge, and roadway design.
  • Use the latest CADD technology.
  • Assist design engineers with project‑related field work.
  • In Construction: receive training in proper procedures for inspection of contractor work such as widening and resurfacing, hazard elimination, guardrail, intersections, drainage facilities, forms and reinforcing steel, concrete placement on structures, flexible and rigid pavement; assist in bituminous plants and perform concrete and soil tests; assist in surveying.
  • In Planning: work under supervision to assist with traffic engineering studies, prepare and review information on highway safety and speed zones, operate a state vehicle to conduct traffic counts, collect and review field data, verify sign and pavement marking locations, photograph proposed project sites, research and analyze accidents and traffic signal warrants; become familiar with PC‑based and mainframe CADD systems, Micro Station, and other software used in data collection and highway plan preparation.
  • In Design: serve as an understudy or assistant on small projects, receive training on procedures, operate a PC and CADD (Micro Station) system, perform duties independently, call up and work with files, copy, update and revise existing drawings in the CADD database, create new drawings from sketches or ports of existing drawings, perform calculations; assist with engineering studies and preliminary engineering;

    use CADD applications to develop highway reconstruction plans including plan and profile sheets, highway and bridge detail drawings, tables, summaries, general notes, map routing, and finalization of plan sheets for reproduction.
  • In Survey: operate survey measuring devices (rod and prism), instruments such as transit, digital level, GPS receiver, total station, data collector to obtain survey data and calculate precise measurements; use a personal computer and software (Micro Station, GPS) for archiving survey data; operate a state vehicle to travel to survey sites, clear brush and foliage, locate and set monuments, pins or stones, mark survey points, take field notes on topographic sketches, set up traffic control, and flag traffic through the survey area.
  • In Traffic Operations: assist in creating spreadsheets and filing systems for overhead sign supports, set up files for elevation drawings, sign cut‑sheet drawings, photo‑log pictures, sign inspection forms; create and organize a computer directory for signal information including timings, drawings, and syncro files; enter data for pavement marking contracts, help organize signal shop inventory, assist with lighting maintenance or pavement marking contracts, follow contractors to record work, input diaries into the CMS, and set up new project folders.

Compensation & Schedule

Compensation: $19.50–$24.00 per hour.
