Position: LPN / LVN - General

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN General)

Administers nursing care within scope of practice under the direction of registered nurse, licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist or chiropractor. Examples include administering oxygen, applying sterile dressings, inserting catheters, reinserting gastrostomy tubes, suctioning, irrigating wounds, giving enemas, collecting specimens, performing dialysis treatments, operating hemodialysis equipment and monitoring patients during procedure. Assists physicians with physical exams, treatments and/or laboratory tests. Provides emergency assistance by administering first-aid, performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and/or restraining patients.

Administers controlled drugs, including narcotics and tranquilizers, as well as non-controlled medications in oral, rectal, topical or injectable forms and provides medication instructions to patients. Maintains medication accountability records, including charting patient records, preparing and counting medication, maintaining medication stock and medical equipment and supplies. Observes, documents and reports patient conditions, including medication reactions, treatment responses, patient behavior and progress, and prepares and/or maintains related reports and records.

Provides general nursing, direct care and/or programming assistance. Examples include taking patient vital signs, assisting with personal grooming and hygiene, bathing or daily living activities, administering topical ointments and solutions, repositioning patients, responding to patient alarms, making medical appointments for patients, and assisting with recreational activities. Provides one-on-one or group activities according to interventions stated in treatment plans. Offers assistance to lower-level direct care staff in providing general unskilled nursing care to patients.

Attends and participates in various meetings as assigned. Orders medication and medical supplies, cleans nurses' stations and medication rooms/carts, and performs clerical tasks. Knowledge of skilled licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, client/patient care, first-aid, CPR, and general hospital practices and procedures is essential. Skill in the use of medical equipment and operation of personal computers is required. Ability to understand practical fields of study, manage both abstract and concrete variables, recognize unusual or threatening conditions, and take appropriate emergency action is essential.

Develops rapport with patients and demonstrates dexterity to administer injections and perform medical treatments. Strength to move, reposition or restrain patients is also required.
