The Reading Coach provides job-embedded professional development to improve reading and literacy instruction and student achievement. Responsibilities include supporting teachers with initial and ongoing development based on student assessment data, offering differentiated instruction, and delivering intensive intervention. Professional development features in‑classroom coaching and demonstrations. The coach reports to the school principal.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThe Reading Coach will:
- Demonstrate effective instructional strategies for teachers by working weekly with students in whole, small, or individual groups.
- Facilitate study groups.
- Train teachers in administering assessments, analyzing data, and using data to plan and differentiate instruction.
- Coach and mentor colleagues.
- Work with teachers and Reading Interventionists to ensure research‑based reading programs are implemented with fidelity.
- Work with all teachers at the school they serve, helping prioritize time for those teachers, activities, and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement, namely coaching and mentoring in the classrooms.
- Lead or support reading leadership teams.
- Will not be assigned to a regular classroom teaching assignment, must not perform administrative functions that deter from the flow of improving reading instruction and reading performance of students, and must not devote a significant portion of time to administering or coordinating assessments.
- Carry out professional development in alignment with district and school goals.
Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, etc.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCERequires a bachelor's degree or higher and an add‑on endorsement for literacy coach or literacy specialist or a master's degree in reading or closely related field supplemented by three to five years of experience in the classroom, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid S.C. Teaching Certificate in education.
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
- Physical Requirements: Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
- Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
- Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of direction and assignments to subordinates and co‑workers. Includes the receiving of information and direction from supervisor.
- Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of philosophical, financial, administrative and statistical documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare various types of reports, studies, recommendations and other documents with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Has the ability to speak before an audience with poise, voice control and confidence.
