Job Summary

Applies the nursing process to plan and implement the care of patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning. Effectively communicates pertinent patient/family information to the health care team. Collaborates in establishing patient goals and evaluates progress to ensure effective outcomes. Furthers professional growth by engaging in learning activities according to the Board of Nursing standards.

Hours of Position

PRN, nights (7 p‑7 a); minimum PRN commitment is 4 shifts within a 6‑week schedule including 1 major and 1 minor holiday per year.

Location

Vanderbilt Wilson County Emergency Department (VWCH ED) is located on the first floor of Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital. The unit has 19 beds with a typical nurse‑to‑patient ratio of 1:4.

Unit Overview

The environment is fast‑paced and unpredictable, depending on the ever‑changing needs of the patient population served. VWCH Emergency Department is a Certified Level 3 Trauma Center offering 24‑hour care for adult and pediatric patients of all injury and illness levels, from beginning to end of life.

Orientation

New staff receive individualized orientation with a trained preceptor and participate in the Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate in establishing the plan of care, coordinating and implementing care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the continuum.
  • Analyze comprehensive information pertinent to the patient’s care and management to determine nursing diagnosis.
  • Continuously utilize the nursing process to evaluate patient progress toward goals and apply appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes.
  • Employ strategies to promote health and a safe, healthy environment.

Technical Capabilities
  • Care Planning (Novice):
    Demonstrates ability to anticipate resource needs, identify distinct tasks, set priorities, schedule activities, meet deadlines, and organize work within areas of direct responsibility. Competently handles multiple assignments often simultaneously by prioritizing work into manageable and measurable units. Adapts to changes in patient care and area needs with minimal disruption and loss of productivity. Follows up to assure problems and issues are resolved.
  • Nursing Patient Education (Novice):
    Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency in providing patient education in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
  • Nursing Patient Assessment & Evaluation (Novice):
    Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to assess and evaluate patients in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Conducts primary care patient interviews and physical examinations. Recognizes problems, asks questions, and contacts the patient’s primary care provider and other healthcare team members. Experience in gathering pertinent clinical data that aid in referral, treatment, or other primary care pathways.
  • Evidence‑Based Practice (Novice):
    Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to search for evidence to answer clinical questions. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments.
