Work performed involves maintenance tasks of an unskilled and semi-skilled, and skilled nature. Works in maintenance and repair of municipal buildings, structures, and street signs throughout the city. Constructs and repairs structural woodwork and equipment in city buildings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:include the following; however, other duties may be assigned.
- General carpentry work includes sheet rock, mudding, framing, installing fixtures, etc.
- Cleaning, painting, and related tasks for general maintenance of all city structures.
- Installing street signs and other related signs on city routes and property.
- Repairs, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and
- trim.
- Installs glass in windows, doors, and partitions. Replaces damaged ceiling tile, floor tile, and wall
- coverings.
- Installs items such as window shades, Venetian blinds, curtain rods, wall fans, and door locks.
- Handles questions, concerns, and complaints from the general public with tact and diplomacy.
- Mowing, weed eating, litter pick up and related tasks for all City property.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Assists the Building Inspection Department and Fire Marshall as necessary.
- Assists other departments as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.

LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to use necessary tools and equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees. Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of equipment used in general maintenance, carpentry, and construction work.
- Knowledge of city streets and municipal structures.
High School Diploma or GED is required.
DRIVER’S LICENSEValid Tennessee Driver's License with clear driving record is required.
EXPERIENCEA minimum of two years of experience in facilities maintenance and repairs, carpentry, painting or related experience is REQUIRED.
A minimum of five years of experience in facilities maintenance and repairs, carpentry, painting or related experience is strongly desired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, and REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONSMust be capable of performing laborious tasks over extended periods of time. May be exposed to dangerous equipment and to heat, cold, rain, noise, and other adverse conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. Responsible for proper operation of departmental pick-up truck and power tools.
