Visual Instructor - The Ledyard (HS) Colonel Marching Band Summary

The Visual Instructor is responsible for the physical execution, posture, and movement aesthetic of the entire wind and percussion ensemble. This part‑time, seasonal role operates on an extracurricular stipend and reports directly to the Marching Band Director. The instructor teaches the marching style, cleans drill coordinates, and ensures the band achieves high visual scores during competitive field shows.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (college degree or pursuing a degree in Music Education or related field preferred).
  • Previous marching experience (e.g., DCI, WGI, college, or top‑tier high school program) preferred.
  • Experience with modern pageantry arts dance, choreography, and marching techniques preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Teach and refine the ensemble's specific marching style and body carriage.
  • Read coordinate sheets or drill apps (like Ultimate Drill Book or Pyware) to correct spacing, intervals, and individual student alignment on the field.
  • Instruct students on integrated dance, body holds, or expressive movements embedded into the competitive show design.
  • Train students on step‑size accuracy (e.g., 8‑to‑5, 6‑to‑5 steps) and temporal awareness to ensure perfect timing with the music.
  • Run individual dots, coordinate resets, and guide sub‑sections through physical field maneuvers during rehearsals.
  • Provide visual and design consultation to the Band Director and Color Guard Instructor during the design phase of the competitive field show.
  • Design and teach expressive body choreography for the competitive field show.
  • Attendance is expected for all scheduled rehearsals and performances; absences may be approved with advanced notice at the discretion of the Marching Band Director.
  • Perform other duties related to the marching band program as assigned by the Marching Band Director.
